Netflix Stock Drops As Disney+ Swipes U.S. Subscribers
Netflix stock fell on Wednesday after the internet television network admitted that competition from the likes of Walt Disney's (DIS) Disney+ negatively impacted U.S. subscriber additions in the fourth quarter.
Netflix (NFLX) reported fourth-quarter results late Tuesday. The Los Gatos, Calif.-based company said it added 8.76 million new streaming subscribers in the December quarter, topping Wall Street's expectations for 7.8 million new subscribers. But Netflix signed up fewer-than-expected U.S. subscribers during Q4, when Disney+ and Apple's (AAPL) Apple TV+ premiered.
Netflix added 420,000 new subscribers in the U.S., missing its goal of 600,000. But it added 8.33 million new subscribers in international markets, topping its forecast for 7 million.
The U.S. subscriber miss in the fourth quarter "is more troubling than first appears," Needham analyst Laura Martin said in a report. That's because Netflix launched a record 802 hours of original programming in Q4, up 3% year over year. That programming included eight movies with 24 Academy Award nominations such as "The Irishman" and "Marriage Story." Also, Disney+ and Apple TV+ were each free for the first 30 days, she said. Martin rates Netflix stock as underperform.
Netflix stock sank 3.6% to 326 on the stock market today.
