As magma solidifies in formation of ocean floor tectonic plates it is a known fact that direction of magnetic field reverses direction with some periodicity. These magnetic direction changes are frozen in the plates. This is a fact somewhat hard to explain without periodic magnetic field reversal. (Pics related).
