Nerd anon here. Have computer certifications out the wazoo to back me up.

An 8 year old computer is ancient in tech years, so this may not be the generous gift you think it is.

See if there is some interested charity or school in a low economic area nearby and donate your gently used equipment to them. Don’t offer them non working equipment or items without operating system licenses as it would cost too much to make them workable. If the charities pass on your “gift” please don’t be upset. They have been down this road multiple times and know old computers are not always a cost effective gift.

Otherwise, just take your stuff to the local electronics recycler.

Case in point. Some time ago I was working for a school district and a bank offered us a truck load of computers they were swapping out for new ones. I didn’t want them but was forced by the bosses to take them.

Besides the physical labor of moving all theses units, I had to assess each one and determine what parts (memory, hard drive network interface) needed to be upgraded to accept a current operating system, buy the parts, install them, buy OS licenses + software licenses and load all that. Then I had to find scores of driver files to make the OS and hardware talk to each other. The project took months to complete, and the computers ran so slow no one wanted to use them. So we now had a bunch of old junk that we had to pay to store before we could get rid of them.

All in all a big waste of time and resources for no great benefit.
