The UN's top court told Myanmar on Thursday to take urgent steps to prevent the alleged genocide of the Buddhist nation's minority Rohingya Muslims.
The order was the first time that Myanmar has faced justice over a 2017 military crackdown that sent around 740,000 Rohingya fleeing into neighbouring Bangladesh.
The International Court of Justice in The Hague granted a series of emergency steps requested by the mainly Muslim African state of The Gambia under the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Naama Issachar’s release from a Russian prison will be dependent on Israel’s willingness to show gestures of goodwill to Russia, reports Channel 12 News.
Israel has already shown its goodwill by handing control over Alexander’s Courtyard in Jerusalem’s Old City to the Russians and releasing two Syrian security prisoners earlier this month.
Russia also expects Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to give praise to them at Thursday’s Fifth World Holocaust Forum for their part in fighting off the Nazis in World War II.
According to Israel Hayom, Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss formal terms of Issachar’s release with Netanyahu when they meet in person on Thursday.

Last week, Netanyahu spoke to Putin about Issachar’s release and exuded confidence that it will happen soon.
The conversation with Putin was “warm and to the point” and “strengthened the prime minister’s optimism that the issue of the release of Naama Issachar is advancing towards a solution,” the Prime Minister’s Office’s stated at the time.
Issachar was arrested on April 9 at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, where she had stopped for a connecting flight to Tel Aviv from New Delhi. Russian authorities found 9.5 grams of cannabis in her luggage, arrested her and took her into custody to await trial.
She was convicted on Oct. 11 in Moscow’s Khimki City Court on charges of drug possession and smuggling and was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison.

SAN FRANCISCO – The western monarch butterfly population wintering along California’s coast remains critically low for the second year in a row, a count by an environmental group released Thursday showed.
The count of the orange-and-black insects by the Xerces Society, a nonprofit environmental organization that focuses on the conservation of invertebrates, recorded about 29,000 butterflies in its annual survey. That’s not much different than last year’s tally, when an all-time low 27,000 monarchs were counted.
“We had hoped that the western monarch population would have rebounded at least modestly, but unfortunately it has not,” said Emma Pelton, a monarch conservation expert with the Xerces Society.
By comparison, about 4.5 million monarch butterflies wintered in forested groves along the California coast in the 1980s. Scientists say the butterflies are at critically low levels in the Western United States due to the destruction of their milkweed habitat along their migratory route as housing expands into their territory and use of pesticides and herbicides increases.

Chinese health authorities on Thursday confirmed cases of pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in individuals that had no recent travel experience to central China's Wuhan.
The National Health Commission (NHC) also reported increasing cases with no exposure to Wuhan's Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which is believed to be related to most of the infected cases, adding that cases without confirmed exposure to the market have been found overseas.
Medical institutions should organize experts to hold group consultations within two hours of finding suspected cases, according to a new diagnosis and treatment plan issued by the NHC.
The plan also required instant pathogen detection if the suspected cases couldn't be confirmed as common pneumonia. ■
