Lucifer in the Pre-existance was one of the best of us knowledge wise as was Jesus Christ, what went wrong was Lucifer wanted to institute his own plan of salvation where he controlled the masses much like he's trying to do today to us. Jesus offered a plan to God to give man free will and let them choose to go back to him. God saw Jesus' plan as the better plan and went with this, thus we are here being tried and tested on earth. Lucifer having been the son of the morning fell, and fell hard.
