NEW earthquake hits already quake-devastated E. Turkish province – reports

A 5.1 magnitude quake has struck Turkey’s Elazig province, one day after a 6.8 tremor leveled buildings and killed at least 22 people.

The earthquake struck at around 7:30pm local time on Saturday, at a depth of 10km, the United States Geological Survey (USGC) reported. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) has put the magnitude at 4.9.

For residents of Elazig province, it was the second major tremor to shake the region in less than two days. A 6.8 magnitude quake on Saturday claimed at least 22 lives and left more than 1,000 injured, Turkish authorities said. In addition to the human cost, the quake felled concrete buildings in several towns.

Though centered in Elazig, Friday’s quake was felt as far away as Tel Aviv, Israel, 1,000 km to the south.

Turkey straddles several seismic fault lines, and has a history of devastating earthquakes. A 2011 quake near the eastern city of Van killed more than 500 people, while a powerful tremor struck the western city of Izmit in 1999, killing more than 17,000 people and leaving half a million homeless.

There are a reported 119 billionaires attending the Davos confab this year – plus (allegedly) the Donald, who took a day off from Impeachment to address this august gathering of the world’s movers and shakers.

There is also 1500 private jets crowding the surrounding airports – plus the notable train-traveling 17-year old expert on planetary climate science, Greta Thunberg.

Also, among the 10 billionaires in attendance from communist China is Ren Zhenfei, founder of Huawei and father of its CFO, Meng Wanzhou. Even as dad courts the rich and famous on the slopes, daughter languishes in a Canadian jail waiting extradition to the US because she had the audacity to do business with Iran against Washington’s instructions and Trump’s latest fatwa against the Tehran government.

These odd juxtapositions plus countless more got us to thinking about Davos Man himself and the ultimate juxtaposition of our times.

To wit, the combined net worth of the world’s billionaires in the year 2000 was $1 trillion, according to Forbes, but at this bublicious moment that number is reckoned at just under $10 trillion. So the 2,150 members of the Billionaires Club now have more net worth than 60% of the world’s population combined. That’s 4.6 billion people!

In so noting, of course, we are not joining the Bernie Sanders/AOC/Pocahontas brigade. In a world of free markets, honest money and de minimis government, the more billionaires the better. But what we sincerely doubt is that there was an honest and sustainable basis for a 10X gain in the net worth of the Billionaires Club over a two decade period when the world’s nominal GDP only rose from $35 trillion to $85 trillion, or by 2.4X.

After all, the predominately financial assets comprising the world’s net worth are merely the capitalization of its underlying income or GDP. And there is no basis in either sound economics or basic math for the former to grow nearly four times faster than the latter for two decades running.

Stated differently, unless the age-old laws of sound money have been repealed by the economic gods themselves, Davos Man is fixing to become nearly as rare as Neanderthal Man or, more to the point, has been a case of Piltdown Man all along.

Recall that the latter had been touted by some British scoundrels in 1912 to be a 500,000 year-old homo sapiens and evolution’s missing link. Alas, it was actually a ho-hum 50,000 year-old human skeleton fused with the jawbone and teeth of a modern orangutan.

Scientists In Britain May Have Just "Accidentally" Found A Cure For Cancer

Every once in a while, medical researchers simply have a stroke of good luck. In this case, that "stroke of good luck" could have a profound effect on the medial community.

Researchers at Cardiff University that were in the midst of analyzing blood from a bank accidentally stumbled into an "entirely new type of T-cell", according to The Daily Wire. The new cell carries a "never before seen" type of receptor that acts like a grappling hook, latching on to most human cancers.

Prior therapies, called CAR-T and TCR-T, which use immune cells to attach to HLA molecules on cancer cells' surface, are incapable of fighting solid tumors, the article notes. HLA molecules vary in people, but the new therapy instead attaches to a molecule called MR1, which does not vary in humans. This gives the therapy a chance of fighting most cancers.

It also means people could share the treatment, which could allow banks of cells to be stored and offered quickly, as needed.

The treatment has already worked on lung, skin, blood, colon, breast, bone, prostate, ovarian, kidney and cervical cancer cells. The study stated:

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-independent, T cell-mediated targeting of cancer cells would allow immune destruction of malignancies in all individuals. Here, we use genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 screening to establish that a T cell receptor recognized and killed most human cancer types via the monomorphic MHC class-I related protein, MR1, while remaining inert to noncancerous cells … These finding offer opportunities for HLA-independent, pan-cancer, pan-population immunotherapies.

It concluded: “In summary, we describe a TCR that exhibits pan-cancer recognition via the variant MR1 molecule, and, by equipping patients with melanoma T cells that lacked detectable cancer reactivity with the MC.7 G5 TCR, we rendered the T-cells capable of killing autologous melanoma.”

What does that mean? It means "it works". Additionally, T-Cells of skin cancer patients altered by the treatment were capable of killing the patient's cancer cells and other patients' cancer cells as well.

The lead author on the study, Andrew Sewell, said: “This was a serendipitous finding, nobody knew this cell existed. Our finding raises the prospect of a ‘one-size-fits-all’ cancer treatment, a single type of T-cell that could be capable of destroying many different types of cancers across the population. Previously nobody believed this could be possible.”

Who, exactly? Cindy McCain says ‘WE’ all knew about Epstein’s sex crimes

Cindy McCain, widow of the late Arizona Senator John McCain, has raised more than a few eyebrows after remarking that Jeffrey Epstein's horrific crimes against young women were common knowledge. But common for whom, exactly?

Speaking at a conference in Florida, McCain claimed that a girl from her daughter’s high school was one of Epstein’s victims, and said that she hoped the accused sex trafficker –who allegedly killed himself while in detention at a Manhattan prison– was “in hell.”

Her uncontroversial condemnation of the shadowy multi-millionaire was followed by a rather more curious statement.

“Epstein was hiding in plain sight,” said Cindy McCain. “We all knew about him. We all knew what he was doing, but we had no one that was – no legal aspect that would go after him. They were afraid of him. For whatever reason, they were afraid of him.”

She didn’t elaborate, leaving many on social media to speculate on what she meant.

If McCain knew about Epstein she should have come forward, noted numerous Twitter users. Inaction and silence led to “trafficked, sexually assaulted kids & adults” paying the price, one unimpressed commenter argued.

McCain only spoke out against Epstein “after he [was] dead,” read a similarly scornful reply to her comments.

Epstein’s purported suicide in August occurred as he awaited trial on sex-trafficking charges, more than a decade after receiving a 'sweetheart deal' from the government for soliciting prostitution from a minor.

Surveillance footage from last July showing an earlier alleged suicide attempt by Epstein was inexplicably deleted, after first being reported lost then later found.

Pete Buttigieg: Pope Francis Endorsement ‘Most Coveted’ in Primary Race

Former Mayor Pete Buttigieg said Thursday that he wanted the endorsement of Pope Francis over all others in the Democrat primary race.

Buttigieg commented on political endorsements during a podcast interview with CEO of IMPACT Strategies Angela Rye at Claflin University.

“Your most coveted endorsement in the race is who?” Rye asked.

Buttigieg paused, but ultimately said, “The Pope, I want the endorsement of the Pope.”

The former mayor did not choose any prominent Democrats in the country or even former President Barack Obama.

Buttigieg was raised Catholic, but is now an Episcopalian.

The former mayor answered a series of quick questions at the beginning of his interview with Rye.

When asked when was the last time he cussed, Buttigieg admitted that it was “probably an hour ago.”

When asked about his favorite rapper, Buttigieg replied that “Chance” was probably his favorite, getting a mixed response from the crowd.

He also said that “bad grammar in emails” was one of his pet peeves and that the last time he cried was while watching the TV show This Is Us.

When asked about his goals for the new year, Buttigieg replied, “I want to feel built for the summer, I want to get ‘swole.'”

U.S. Warns Britain Accepting Huawei 5G Will Imperil Post-Brexit Trade Deal

The United States has responded to revelations that British Civil Servants have green-lit the involvement of Huawei in the nation’s future 5G data networks with concern, given the widespread and repeated warnings over the company voiced by several top UK allies.

The United Kingdom is expected to make the final decision on 5G technology companies next week at a meeting of the UK National Security Council, but the reported decision of unelected UK civil servants that they approve the involvement of controversial Chinese tech giant Huawei gives a clear indication on the direction of travel. This is likely to cause major friction with top British allies at a time when the United Kingdom needs friends in the wider world, as it departs the European Union.

British newspaper The Times reports comments of a “senior US official” who said of the news: “The appetite for a US-UK trade agreement could be diminished by the UK making the wrong decision on Huawei”, which the paper implied in its reporting is the view of President Trump himself.

It is not clear why the British government is setting course for such an obvious roadblock to a future UK-U.S. trade deal over the Huawei issue, given several British allies including the United States, Australia, and New Zealand have warned over the company, and how its involvement in technology infrastructure in any member nation would imperil the Five Eyes group. Five Eyes, founded in the Second World War is an intelligence-sharing alliance comprising the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand and makes it the closest military alliance on the globe.

Despite the warnings that taking on Huawei would cause problems for its allies, Britain’s MI5 internal intelligence agency has insisted there is no reason for concern. President Trump has previously said the UK should be “very careful from the standpoint of national security”.

Part of the problem for the United Kingdom, as expressed by government minister Andrea Leadsom, is simply that Huawei technology is cheaper and more advanced than any other on the market presently. The difficulty claimed by many is that Huawei is thought to be controlled by the Chinese government and allowing their equipment to route data traffic would offer unparalleled opportunities for espionage and even sabotage.

Even so, Australia has warned the cheap tech offered by China isn’t worth the risk. The Times report cites Kimberley Kitching, an Australian Labor chairwoman of the senate foreign affairs, defence and trade references committee, who said: “It is the ultimate false economy to allow the commercial benefits to outweigh the security considerations where a vendor cannot offer 100 per cent integrity.”

As Breitbart London reported Thursday, the U.S. reacted with apparent alarm at the news their British allies might consider allowing Chinese 5G into critical national infrastructure. Trade Secretary Steven Mnuchin has indicated he will be raising his country’s concerns with his British counterparts at meetings today and on Sunday.

Head of DEA-Vetted Mexican Police Unit Faces New Drug Charges in U.S.

A top Mexican police official who was the head of a DEA-vetted special unit to fight cartels is in U.S. custody facing drug trafficking charges. The case appears to be connected to the recent trial of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and the arrest of Genaro Garcia Luna, another leading law enforcement figure.

Court documents filed in the Eastern District of New York revealed that U.S. prosecutors are asking for a judge to deny any sort of bond against Ivan Reyes Arzate, claiming his prior role in law enforcement and the severity of charges suggest a high flight risk.

It remains unclear when Reyes Arzate was arrested. In 2018, he pleaded no contest to another drug charge and was serving a 40-month prison sentence. He was expected to be deported later this month after completing his initial sentence, however, that changed when a criminal indictment was filed on Thursday for cocaine trafficking charges. A letter filed by prosecutors describes Reyes Arzate as the commander of Mexico’s Federal Police Sensitive Investigations Unit who used the position to help the Sinaloa and Beltran Leyva Cartels in exchange for hefty bribes. Reyes Arzate allegedly leaked intelligence to drug kingpins as well.

Court documents state that Mexico’s SIU was made up of police officers vetted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. They also received training in Quantico, Virginia.

According to prosecutors, “the defendant was the principal point of contact for information sharing between U.S. and Mexican law enforcement personnel assigned to the SIU,” the document revealed. “He routinely had contact with and worked collaboratively with DEA agents in Mexico City.”

During his role as the SIU commander, Reyes Arzate worked with a criminal organization that operates between South America to several U.S. cities known as “El Seguimiento 39.” The relatively new organization reportedly cooperates with several Mexican cartels, including the Sinaloa, Beltran Leyva, Los Zetas, and the Gulf.

The charges against Reyes Arzate come one month after U.S. authorities arrested Genaro Garcia Luna, Mexico’s former top law enforcement official. Garcia Luna oversaw the country’s entire Federal Police apparatus–reporting directly to the former president.

An increasing number of Americans are taking action against telecom companies wanting to install 4G and 5G small cell towers (see 1, 2) in their communities. Clusters of illnesses have been identified near cell towers. Even if you’re not concerned about radiation exposure – having a cell tower installed near your home will undoubtedly reduce your property value.

Kudos to the Western Springs, IL Village Council for making a big enough stink to stop Crown Castle from installing one there.

Prolonged exposure to any source of cell phone and wireless WiFi radiation doesn’t only increase cancer risk. It can cause “Microwave Sickness” and “Electromagnetic Sensitivity.” American Academy of Pediatrics and other health experts warn that children are more vulnerable to exposure. Since 2004, the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) has opposed the use of their stations for cell phones and antennas due to health risks to members. Animals and nature are affected by exposure as well.

Telecom companies have still provided NO scientific evidence that 5G is safe. Requests for 5G moratoriums from doctors and scientists started in 2017. Goldman Sachs Unveils Plan to Actively Discriminate Against White Men

The era of the white, all-male board is coming to an end.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Chief Executive Officer David Solomon issued the latest ultimatum Thursday from Davos. Wall Street's biggest underwriter of initial public offerings in the U.S. will no longer do business with a company lacking a director who is either female or diverse.

The mandate is the latest in a series of signals that non-diverse boards and management are unacceptable. BlackRock Inc. and State Street Global Advisors are voting against directors at companies without a female director. Public companies with all-male boards based in California now face a $100,000 fine under a new state law.

A second article from Bloomberg revealed the policy will not apply to Asia or the Middle East (i.e. Israel and Saudi Arabia):

[T]he rule applies only to IPOs in the U.S. and Europe. Asia's exclusion is striking, given how common all-male boards are in the region. Other bastions of male dominance, including Latin America and the Middle East, also went unmentioned.

“Like Lego blocks that nearly universally fit together, Mosaic forces can be composed together in a way to create packages that can effectively target an adversary’s system with just-enough overmatch to succeed,” says a Mitchell Institute study (pdf), released in September.

Mosaic warfare is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s solution to China’s growing military prowess.

China’s generals have honed their military to cripple the U.S. military’s brain and nervous system—a strategy known as Systems Destruction warfare. They have also invested heavily in long-range missile systems and anti-aircraft systems that threaten U.S. carriers and jets.

In war-gaming carried out by U.S. analysts, China often defeats the United States in some scenarios of Pacific warfare.

With its aircraft carriers, jets, and command systems no longer able to guarantee dominance, the U.S. military is revamping across the board.

America’s most potent weapons systems pack multiple capabilities. The F-35, for example, is a missile launcher, radar sensor, stealth reconnaissance, targeting system and much more rolled into one.

With Mosaic warfare, instead of a limited number of the latest high-tech toys, military commanders would have the strategic equivalent of countless building blocks. Some would be unmanned.

The Left Is One Huge Internet Troll

As conservative writers for online magazines are all too well aware, their leftist adversaries are not interested in serious debate or mannerly conversation. Civility is not the left’s strong suit. Tactics vary along a spectrum of readily predictable talking points, false assertions, vituperation and obscenity, the stock in trade of those who have come to be known as trolls. Who and what is a troll?

Originally, trolls were unsightly folklore creatures dwelling in caves, forests, and, as in the famous folk tale, under bridges. Unlike their doppelgängers in the Disney film, they were not sweet and innocent powder-blue creatures resembling the Smurfs and the Na’vi, but gnarled and revolting specimens of indiscriminate voracity. Distinctly hostile and governed by an appetite for human flesh, they became the source of the contemporary internet troll.

The modern troll is the digital form of the contract killer. He lives in the shadows; is prone to using an alias behind which he hides; has no known street address or postal code; is often paid for his services by some powerful figure whose public presence may be known—say, a bloviating multi-billionaire with a highly dubious personal history who manages to evade the law; has no conscience and is not very intelligent but is as cunning as he is unscrupulous—in short, the internet troll is a coward who “kills” in the dark. He is motivated by envy and resentment and has neither self-respect nor moral fiber. He is devoid of productive talents and lacks the ability to make a success of his life. He is, in the current idiom, a loser.

Or course, not every troll is a hired gun. Some like to devour their prey as self-elected vigilantes who need not bother with the labor of constructing a convincing counter-argument—that, after all, takes real work. But in either case, they are the gremlins of the internet world, sniping away at the legitimate participants in the cultural debate or infesting the Twittersphere, often under the cloak of anonymity and the camouflage of fake accounts. They are not part of the conversation but the dregs of the hermeneutic exchange.
