I'm not advertising a brand on here. Just do your research, it's not new technology and they all work basically the same way.
I've had the ones with the snap in filters, and they get down to about 30-40 ppm TDS which is not bad. The more substantial ones are a little more work to maintain, but they'll get into the sub-10 range which is about as good as you can expect with a non-commercial system.
They do use more water than they put out, but I wouldn't say you are wasting that water. The contaminants in the source water need to be carried away somehow. Better down the drain than out your kidneys.
