The pilot didn't know how to do an auto-rotate? I thought it was one of the first things all helicopter pilots learn in case of engine failure. Hard landing, but easily survivable.

They would need to take out the pilot. A fire would effectively cover a lot of the evidence up and stop the pilot from performing an emergency landing.
