Concur. Encountered loss of tail rotor effectiveness once when inexperienced pilot attempted down-wind peddle turn with full load while still inside the cushion. Survived thanks to IP taking control before impact, and near zero altitude.
Loss of gearbox would cause the bang. Could it have happened in tandem with a compressor stall in one engine?
