Supreme Court Allows Trump Admin to Enforce Rule Barring Green Cards For Migrants Using Taxpayer-Funded Social Programs

The Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favor of Trump and allowed his administration to implement a “public charge” immigration restriction in a 5-4 vote.

Justices Thomas and Gorsuch critiqued the nationwide injunctions.

Reuters reported:

The U.S. Supreme Court gave the go-ahead on Monday for one of President Donald Trump’s hardline immigration policies, allowing his administration to implement a rule denying legal permanent residency to certain immigrants deemed likely to require government assistance in the future.

The justices, on a 5-4 vote, granted the administration’s request to lift a lower court’s injunction that had blocked the so-called public charge policy, which has been criticized by immigrant rights advocates as a “wealth test” that would disproportionately keep out non-white immigrants.

The court’s five conservative justices, including Chief Justice John Roberts, carried the day. The court’s four liberal justices said they would have denied the administration’s request to put the injunction on hold. The action was announced even as Roberts sat as the presiding officer in Trump’s impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate.

Must Government Save Us from the Coronavirus?

In the spring of 2014, when awareness of Ebola was just beginning to dawn, a case of infection appeared in the town of Harbel, Liberia. The biggest employer in the area is Firestone. The company immediately set up a quarantine area of its hospital for the infected woman, who soon died.

They distributed hazmat suits to workers. They researched everything they could, built a treatment center, and set up a comprehensive response. Transmission stopped. Even now, the only cases seen in this area come from outside the community.

National Public Radio reported on the case and concluded:

even as the worst Ebola outbreak ever recorded rages all around them, Firestone appears to have blocked the virus from spreading inside its territory…. A key reason for Firestone’s success is the close monitoring of people who have potentially been exposed to the virus — and the moving of anyone who has had contact with an Ebola patient into voluntary quarantine. By most accounts, this Ebola outbreak remains out of control, with health care workers across West Africa struggling to contain it.

Another triumph of the market and human volition! Still, somehow, the lesson here has not penetrated. As with every crisis in the history of the modern world, Ebola fears gave rise to debates over government power, just as the Coronavirus has today.

China has kicked into gear the largest quarantine in modern history. As George E. Wantz, distinguished professor of the history of medicine at the University of Michigan, has written:

To combat the contagion, the Chinese government has taken the extraordinary step of quarantining the city of Wuhan, as well as neighboring districts and cities. The borders are sealed, and all transportation out is blocked. Officials closed the public transportation systems. Friday morning, more than 35 million people woke up facing aggressive curtailments of their freedom.

Is all this necessary? Wantz looks at the numbers:

Pompeo Calls on Baghdad to Take Immediate Steps to Protect US Diplomatic Facilities

Several projectiles landed late on Sunday night next to the "green zone" in the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad, where the US embassy and various Iraqi government buildings are located. The attack occurred less than a week after a previous shelling hit the heavily fortified area.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday in a phone call with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abd al-Mahdi that Sunday's attack resulted in one injury and expressed also his "outrage at the continued assaults by Iran’s armed groups against U.S. facilities in Iraq", according to a statement issued by US Department of State.

"The Secretary underlined once again that these attacks demonstrate a wanton disregard for Iraqi sovereignty and a failure to rein in these dangerous armed groups. He appreciated Prime Minister Abd al-Mahdi’s commitment to strengthen security to protect American personnel and diplomatic facilities", the statement said.

FOIA Docs Show Anti-Trump DOJ Official Appointed to Oversee FISA Reforms Sending Draft WaPo Op-Eds Attacking Nunes to DOJ’s National Security Division

New FOIA docs reveal David Kris, the anti-Trump Obama-era DOJ official assigned to oversee FISA reforms was sending WaPo op-ed drafts attacking Nunes’s FISA memo to fellow DOJ members asking for edits and clearance.

“Hello [redacted], I have been asked by WaPo to write an op-ed on the forthcoming FISA memo from Chairman Nunes,” David Kris wrote ONE DAY BEFORE Nunes released his two-page FISA memo outlining FISA abuse and the FBI’s targeting of Trump’s 2016 campaign.

“If you get stuck on anything particular in the draft, I will be happy to cut or modify,” David Kris wrote to Tashina Gauhar, the #2 DOJ official under then-DAG Rod Rosenstein.

There’s more…

David Kris also called Nunes a “chairman who appears to have gone rogue.”

“I worry that the Nunes memo will benefit from a combination of legal ignorance, the FBI’s reluctance to compromise intelligence sources as necessary to correct the memo’s “material omissions,” and — most significantly — a continued presumption of integrity and good faith, rooted in the paradigm of intelligcence under law that has prevailed for 40 years, in an Intelligence Committee chairman who appears to have gone rogue.” – Kris wrote to the DOJ’s Tashina Gauhar.

David Kris is a corrupt, unelected bureaucrat who wishes to impose his agenda onto the American public.

Judge Boasberg recently announced in an order that he appointed Obama-era national security leader at the DOJ David S. Kris as amicus counsel to review the reforms the FBI will be making to its FISA application process.

This order was in response to the FBI abusing the FISA process after it obtained a total of four FISA warrants on Carter Page.

Ken Starr Accuses House Democrats Of Delivering Impeachment Articles ‘Dripping With Process Violations’

Ken Starr took the Senate floor Monday and ripped into House Democrats for turning over articles of impeachment that he claimed were “dripping with process violations.”

Starr, who once led the prosecution against former President Bill Clinton, delivered his remarks in defense of President Donald Trump as his impeachment trial continued in the Senate.

Starr made several comparisons to prior impeachments, criticizing the House for moving forward despite having no Republican support whatsoever. He then took aim at the House for changing the process in a lopsided fashion. (RELATED: ‘It’s Over’: Ken Starr Says No Doubt Schiff Will Move On Articles Of Impeachment After Sondland Testimony)

“But then again, the House members took no oath to be impartial,” Starr said. “The Constitution didn’t require them to say by oath or affirmation like an impartial justice. They were oathless. They could toss out their own rule book. Raw power.”

Starr went on to argue that the articles of impeachment against President Trump were indicative of a “runaway House” that had run from its own processes and even the Constitution in order to reach a desired conclusion. Instead, he suggested, they provided the Senate with an “exit ramp,” adding, “House Democrats chose to conduct an unprecedented process in this case, and they were warned at every turn, don’t do it, don’t do it that way.”

“The president is being denied the basic rights that have been afforded to every single accused president in the history of the republic, even to the racist Andrew Johnson, seeking to undo Mr. Lincoln’s great legacy. He got those rights, but not here,” Starr continued. “Due Process could have been honored. Basic rights could have been honored. The House rules, the House’s traditions could have been honored, but what is done is done. These two articles come before this court, this high court of impeachment, dripping with fundamental process violations.”

Starr concluded by addressing the Senate and demanding that they apply the standards written into the Constitution’s preamble.

“The very first order of our government after to form a more perfect union is to establish justice, to establish justice, even before getting to the words to provide for the common defense, to promote the general welfare, to ensure domestic tranquility, the Constitution works to establish justice,” he said.

“Courts would not allow this. They would not allow this because why?” Starr added. “They knew and they know that the purpose of our founding instrument is to protect our liberties. To safeguard us, but to safeguard us as individuals against the powers of government … to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. Liberty under law.”

DNC’s Tom Perez nominates regime-change agents, Israel lobbyists, and Wall Street consultants to rig the game against Bernie

By Kevin Gosztola - Kevin Gosztola is managing editor of Shadowproof.com. He also produces and co-hosts the weekly podcast, “Unauthorized Disclosure.”

With Sen. Bernie Sanders surging in the polls, DNC chair Tom Perez has put forward a cartoonishly neoliberal cast of foreign policy hacks and corporate lobbyists to sabotage his nomination.

Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez has nominated dozens of lobbyists, corporate consultants, think tank board members, and former officials linked to Barack Obama and Bill and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaigns to serve on the Democratic National Convention (DNC) nominating committee this July.

Many of Perez’s nominees are vocal opponents of Senator Bernie Sanders and spoke out against his campaign when he challenged Hillary Clinton for the nomination in 2016.

Just as it did in 2016, the DNC appears determined to sabotage a Sanders nomination, foisting a collection of neoliberal and imperialist hacks onto the convention committee to hold back a popular rebellion against the policies of endless war and corporate free trade they have personally presided over.

Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez issued a list of individuals he nominated for the 2020 Democratic National Convention committees.

Let's examine some of the individuals. I'll initially focus on the nominees for the DNC Platform Committee.

— Kevin Gosztola (@kgosztola) January 25, 2020

Only a small percentage of those on the roster, such as Communications Workers of America President Larry Cohen, are even remotely aligned or sympathetic to Sanders’ progressive agenda, and many of them are 2020 superdelegates.

Though the Democratic Party reduced the influence of superdelegates after a backlash from Sanders supporters, over 700 superdelegates will be able to vote as part of a brokered convention if Sanders is not the nominee after the first ballot. They would not have to vote for Sanders, even if he won a majority of pledged delegates in their state’s caucus or primary.

Sanders could secure enough pledged delegates to win on the first ballot and still find his agenda thwarted by the standing committees. For example, members of the DNC’s Platform Committee beholden to corporate interests could vote against including “Medicare For All” or a ban on natural fracking in the agenda of policies they plan to fight for in 2020.

A close look at the list Perez offers a gruesome vision of morally repugnant operatives rigging the game on behalf of a desperate and increasingly discredited party elite.

US suicide rate up 40% in 17 years, blue-collar workers highest risk: CDC

The suicide rate has surged 40% in the U.S. over less than two decades, with blue-collar workers — particularly mining, oilfield, construction and auto-repair workers — at a significantly higher risk, according to new research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC analyzed suicide rates by industry and occupational groups by gender using data from the 32 states that participated in the 2016 National Violent Death Reporting system. Researchers examined the suicide rates by profession for 20,975 people between the ages of 16 and 64. For both men and women, construction and “extraction” workers, mostly in the mining or oil and gas fields, had the highest suicide rates, the CDC found in research published Thursday.

“Previous research indicates suicide risk is associated with low-skilled work, lower education, lower absolute and relative socioeconomic status, work-related access to lethal means, and job stress, including poor supervisory and colleague support, low job control, and job insecurity, the CDC wrote.

The total suicide rate among all men was 27.4 individuals per 100,000 people, but the rate among those in the construction field was 49.4 per 100,000. For women, the suicide rate for the total population studied was 7.7 per 100,000 individuals. The suicide rate for women in construction and extraction, however, was 25.5 per 100,000 individuals — the highest among any profession.

Among industry groups, mining, quarrying and oil and gas workers had the highest suicide rate for men at 54.2 per 100,000.

In 2017, nearly 38,000 people between the ages of 16 and 64 died by suicide in the U.S., according to the CDC. The overall suicide rate rose by 40% from 12.9 per 100,000 people in 2000 to 18 per 100,000 people in 2017. In response to the rising rate, the public health institute launched the industry and occupation study to help inform suicide prevention.

“These findings highlight opportunities for targeted prevention strategies and further investigation of work-related factors that might increase risk of suicide,” the study’s authors wrote in a discussion note.

Some SF restaurants now charging voluntary fee to fight climate change

What a hoax.

From Yahoo: A handful of restaurants in San Francisco have opted in to a program that supports soil health and fights climate change — by making their customers’ meals a bit more expensive.

Bay Area restaurants that choose to participate in the state’s new Restore California program are adding a 1 percent surcharge on diners’ checks to support the initiative starting this month, according to a news release from Zero Foodprint, a nonprofit working with state agencies on the program.

Those restaurant surcharges will be funneled into grants supporting farmers and ranchers — money that will “directly fund carbon farming projects such as compost application, cover crop planting, tree planting and improved grazing management,’ according to Zero Foodprint.

“Restore California allows consumers to have a direct impact by shifting acres of farmland from extractive to renewable practices,” Karen Leibowitz, executive director of Zero Foodprint, said in a statement, comparing the agriculture-oriented program to how power “companies enable residents to improve the grid by funding renewable energy projects.”

“A tax is mandatory, and this is voluntary,” program organizers write on its website. “It’s more like a fundraiser for good food and farming. Restaurants and diners can opt in or opt out of Restore California.”

SF Eater reports that “while every restaurant in the state could participate, so far, it’s mostly upscale restaurants, most of them in SF: think Atelier Crenn, Flour + Water, or Lazy Bear, for example. (A full list of participating restaurants is here.)”

But the surcharge apparently hasn’t panned out perfectly everywhere.

Brandon Kirksey, co-owner of the pasta restaurant Great Gold in the city’s Mission District, said that — a month after imposing the surcharge on checks in the fall — his restaurant decided to change tactics in response to “negative” feedback from customers who wanted it taken off their bill, Mother Jones reported.

“Having that additional surcharge on there I think made a lot of people feel uncomfortable. People get a little stand-offish when it comes to change,” Kirksey said, adding that the restaurant decided to raise prices on the menu by 1 percent instead of charging a fee, according to Mother Jones. “Ever since the verbiage changed, people are more excited to learn about it, rather than complain about the fee.”

“If We’re Keeping Score on Who Got it Right – The Score is Mayor Giuliani 4, Mr. Schiff Zero” – Trump Attorney Jane Raskin Destroys Democrats and Fake-News Media

Trump Attorney Jane Raskin took to the floor of the US Senate Chamber on Monday afternoon after the first break.

Jane Raskin is an exceptional lawyer.

Jane Raskin laid out the Giuliani timeline on investigating the Burisma corruption and Ukrainian corruption back in 2018.

Raskin then provided evidence via the mainstream media including CNN and The Hill several reports on Rudy investigating Ukraine back in 2018. CNN and the rest of the liberal mainstream media has refused to report this despite their own previous reporting.

Raskin added, “The House Managers didn’t even allude to that option.”

Attorney Jane Raskin then ended with this, “It seems to me if we’re keeping score on who got it right on allegations of FISA abuse, egregious misconduct at the highest level of the FBI, alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, and supposed obstruction of justice in connection with the Special Counsel investigation? The score is Mayor Giuliani 4, Mr. Schiff – Zero!”
