I like the idea of calling witnesses but I'm afraid that Creepy Joe, Hunter, the whistleblower, et all will only plead the 5th and result in a huge waste of time. Particularly when you consider how much they'll fight it to even begin with.

IF witnesses are a part of The Plan then Bolton has to be a land mine, disguised as bait for Schiff and the Ds. He's the only one who would necessarily need to plead the 5th (at least on the surface) and could spill the beans on everything going on behind the scenes.

Not subpoenaing Bolton to begin with would elude to them being afraid of what he has to say.

I could see it like this…

If Bolton testifies first, he spills the beans on what was going on behind the scenes with the Bidens and the 'why' as to the "hold". Bidens are put in a bind with their dirty laundry out and unable to plead the 5th.

If Bidens go first, they plead the 5th out of the gate. Bolton comes behind them, spilling the beans and explaining to the World why exactly they ARE pleading the 5th. Complete disaster.
