It was a wrap, not paint, and if it was peeling would have required removal at some point. He might have even been looking at a different wrap.
3.One aircraft could have recently been sold and another bought. N numbers can be transferred quite easily.

As a professional pilot of 25+ years, I can say, this look like a CFIT accident. It has ALL the tale tell signs.

I'm not saying it IS FOR SURE a CFIT accident, but if it isn't a lot of trouble was gone to, to make it look that way.
