in canyons the winds that the helicopter will produce in a 'hover' will create backdrafts that make the hover very unsafe. the helicopter is much more stable if it keeps moving forward, and that must also include moving in a wide enough circular pattern, as well. "hover" is the most unstable and unsafe way to use a helicopter in a hills or canyons.
