Ukraine’s ex-prosecutor who led Burisma investigation demands criminal probe of Biden

Former top prosecutor of Ukraine, Viktor Shokin, has filed a criminal complaint with the state authorities, claiming former US Vice President Joe Biden strong-armed Kiev into firing him in order to stop the Burisma investigation.

In the complaint Shokin sent to the Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) on Monday, the former prosecutor requests that Biden be charged with “interference with the activities of a law enforcement officer.” The document was obtained by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

Shokin urged the SBI to kick-start a pre-trial investigation into the alleged crime committed by Biden, who he claims was illegally pressuring Ukrainian officials into ousting him from office while using a $1 billion loan guarantee as a leverage.

Noting that Biden, in his official capacity as the second-in-command in the US political hierarchy, repeatedly visited Ukraine in late 2015 and early 2016 to persuade high-ranking officials to remove him, Shokin argued that “as a result, he curtailed an objective investigation criminal proceedings on the facts of unlawful activities of persons associated with the company Burisma Holdings Limited (Cyprus), including the son of the specified high-ranking official [Biden’s son Hunter, who sat on the company’s board from 2014 till 2019].”

Shokin specifically refers to the recently released documentary series ‘UkraineGate: Inconvenient facts,’ by French investigative journalist Olivier Berruyer, which challenges the Western media claims that the corruption investigation into Burisma was “dormant” at the time Biden was lobbying for Shokin’s dismissal.

Warren calls for criminalizing online 'disinformation,' gets roasted for Orwellian overreach

Democratic presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren has called for criminalizing knowingly disseminating ‘disinformation’ about voting, a move that would give the government the power to decide what constitutes truth and lies.

Warren called for “civil and criminal penalties for knowingly disseminating false information about when and how to vote in US elections” on Wednesday, part of a lengthy and occasionally self-contradictory plan for “fighting digital disinformation” posted to her campaign website. The policy has raised a few eyebrows, given the candidate’s own tenuous relationship with the truth and the slippery slope that tends to come into play whenever censorship is involved.

The Massachusetts senator also called for a “summit of countries to enhance information sharing and coordinate policy responses to disinformation” and “additional sanctions against countries that engage in election interference through disinformation,” though she did not make clear how she would divide the world into disinformation “victim” and “perpetrator” nations. She only mentioned Russia in the latter category, forgetting disinformation campaigns having surfaced run by the US itself and Israel along with the usual US targets like Iran.

Prices of Surgical Masks, Disinfectants in Hong Kong Surge Amid Coronavirus Fears

Supplies such as surgical masks and disinfectants have undergone shortages and price surges in Hong Kong in the last few days over fears that the deadly coronavirus would spread in the city as people who spent the Lunar New Year in mainland China return home to the semi-autonomous state.

So far, Hong Kong has seen at least eight confirmed cases of the deadly virus, which is officially known as 2019-nCoV and is related to the virus that causes sudden acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

According to a report by Asia Times, grocery stores in Hong Kong have increased the price of a three-layer surgical mask from about $0.26 to $0.39, and masks being sold at vending machines at public hospitals were going for as high as $0.39. Some grocery stores in the New Territories, which is one of the three main regions of Hong Kong, have raised the price of three-layer surgical masks to around $2.30.

UN Admits Hackers Infiltrated Key Servers In Espionage Breach

A complex cyber attack on UN centres in Europe was discovered over a month before being revealed to employees. Reports claim that the UN was looking into the scale of the attack as late as September 2019.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Wednesday that the organization's offices in Geneva and Vienna were targeted in July 2019 by sophisticated cyberattacks.

"[The] attacks took place in the middle of last year," Dujarric told reporters on Wednesday. "The attribution of any attack remains very fuzzy and uncertain, so we are not able to pinpoint to any specific potential attacker, but it was from all accounts a well-resourced attack."

Earlier in the day, The New Humanitarian (TNH) reported that UN offices in Geneva and Vienna were infiltrated by hackers in 2019.

Dujarric reportedly confirmed to TNH that the attack took place, adding that it was “serious” but, due to an undetermined level of severity, was not revealed to employees at the time.

Democrat Eliz Markowitz was heavily defeated Tuesday night in the nationally-followed special election runoff for Texas House District 28. The candidate was backing by failed Democratic presidential candidate and former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke.

Republican businessman Gary Gates won the state house race by 16 points, nearly doubling the GOP’s margin of victory during the 2018 election, according to The Houston Chronicle. Immigration judges are reaching their breaking point with this administration’s racist policies

But dozens of immigration judges have reported that despite their efforts to stick out the presidency, they’ve just reached their breaking points. The Los Angeles Times spoke with dozens of judges who are quitting or taking early retirement because they simply cannot stomach having to enforce Trump administration policies on immigrants.

Immigration Judge Charles Honeyman served for 24 years on the bench, and thought he still had more time in him. But this month he quit. He told the paper he pushed back against Trump as best he could, doing things like granting asylum for domestic violence victims from other countries, even after the administration released an order saying domestic violence isn’t a valid reason for asylum.

Suspects accused of running $7M fentanyl ring released without bail

Six suspected drug dealers who are accused of running a $7 million fentanyl distribution operation out of a Bronx apartment were released without bail under the state’s new criminal justice law early Wednesday.

The suspects — Livo Valdez, Jaslin Baldera, Frederick Baldera, Frandi Ledema, Diego Tejada and Parfraimy Antonio — were arrested Monday when officers with the New York Drug Enforcement Task Force raided an apartment on Sedgwick Avenue in Kingsbridge that was allegedly used as a heroin and fentanyl packaging mill.

They were each charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminally using drug paraphernalia.

San Francisco official in charge of cleaning up city's filthy streets arrested

The head of San Francisco Public Works, which is in charge of cleaning up the city’s feces-filled streets, has been arrested by the FBI on suspicion of public corruption.

San Francisco Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru was arrested Monday alongside Nick Bovis, the owner of a popular sports bar in Fisherman’s Wharf, Lefty O-Doul’s. Sources told NBC Bay Area that Nuru was arrested on suspicion of accepting bribes for airport concession contracts.

Both Nuru and Bovis were released on bond following their arrest.

As the top official in charge of the $312 million city public works budget since 2012, Nuru was tasked with cleaning up San Francisco streets, which critics note remain cluttered with feces, trash and used needles amid a homelessness crisis.
