Doc. 162 Flynn Motion to Dismiss for Egregious Government Misconduct and in the Interest of Justice

The Daily Caller reported:

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn on Wednesday denied lying to the FBI during a Jan. 24, 2017, White House meeting, and said he regrets pleading guilty in the special counsel’s probe.

“I am innocent of this crime, and I request to withdraw my guilty plea,” Flynn said in a declaration submitted Wednesday in his case…

…In Wednesday’s declaration, the first that Flynn himself has submitted in his case, he denied lying to the FBI during the White House meeting, which was set up by then-Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

“When FBI agents came to the White House on January 24, 2017, I did not lie to them. I believed I was honest with them to the best of my recollection at the time,” Flynn said.

“I still don’t remember if I discussed sanctions on a phone call with Ambassador Kislyak nor do I remember if we discussed the details of a UN vote on Israel.”

Flynn describes in the declaration that he ultimately pleaded guilty in his case after the special counsel’s team began a “sudden and intense” pressure campaign in November 2017 to force him to accept a plea deal.

Flynn said his attorneys at the time told him he could be facing up to 15 years in prison if he did not cooperate. He also said prosecutors were threatening to bring charges against his son, Michael Flynn Jr., on charges related to their work in 2016 for a Turkish businessman linked to the Turkish government.

Democratic Lawmaker Demands FBI, DNI Probe Alleged Saudi Hack of Bezos Phone

The Guardian broke the news earlier this month, citing unnamed security sources, that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman may have been personally involved in using WhatsApp to hack into Washington Post owner and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' private cell phone.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in a letter on Wednesday asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) to probe the matter, according to The Hill.

Murphy reportedly asked that the agencies brief the US Congress on “all preliminary and final conclusions” involved in a potential investigation into the hack of Bezos’ phone.

The letter to agency leaders came on the heels of a separate inquiry last week sent by Democratic Senator Ron Wyden to National Security Agency (NSA) Director Paul Nakasone raising concerns around devices owned by government officials, in particular smartphones belonging to senior White House advisers including US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, The Hill said.

Kushner reportedly communicated with bin Salman via WhatsApp in 2018.

The alleged hack via the Whatsapp messaging tool, according to Guardian sources, happened five months before Saudi agents killed Washington Post columnist and Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi in October 2018. Bezos, currently reported to be the world’s wealthiest person, owns The Washington Post and has led vigils in memory of Khashoggi, often criticizing the kingdom.

Bin Salman and Bezos met in early 2018, as the Crown Prince conducted a US tour characterized as a charm offensive to attract investment to Saudi Arabia ahead of a much-anticipated IPO for the state-run oil company Aramco.

The Guardian report implicates Saudi Arabia in previous, although unresolved, hacking scandals surrounding Bezos.

In early 2019, Bezos made known that the National Enquirer - a US tabloid - had obtained intimate messages and nude photos which it threatened to release. It remains unknown how the Enquirer obtained the purported material, which has not been made public.

Capitol Police Arrest 41 ‘Remove Trump’ Protesters, Charge Them With ‘Crowding, Obstructing or Incommoding’

The Capitol Police arrested 41 “Remove Trump” protesters on Wednesday after they swarmed the Hart Senate Building.

The demonstrators were chanting for Trump to be removed from office and for more witnesses to be called in the trial.

The Hill reports that groups involved in the protest included Public Citizen, Women’s March, Center for Popular Democracy Action, Stand Up America, March for Truth, Demand Justice and the Poor People’s Campaign.

“The Republicans are rigging this trial and the one force that could actually change this equation is the power of the people coming out in the streets and demanding witnesses, demanding evidence and demanding conviction and removal,” Rafael Kadaris, a protester with RefuseFacism.org, a front group for the Revolutionary Communist Party, a cult lead by Bob Avakian, told The Hill.

PMorgan To Slash Hundreds Of Jobs Across Consumer Division

JPMorgan Chase & Co. is expected to announce several hundred layoffs in the coming weeks, according to a Bloomberg source.

Layoffs could be seen across the company's consumer unit, which houses 50% of the bank's revenue. The most affected subunits could include auto lending, home mortgages, and credit cards.

The cuts come at a time when JPM recorded some of the highest profits ever with $36.4 billion, due to a 56% increase in stock and bond trading in the fourth quarter, after it single-handedly triggered the repo crisis, forcing the Fed to launch 'Not QE.'

The layoffs are expected to be announced on February 6th, the source said, adding that the cut will be about 1% of employees in the unit.

We noted Tuesday that JPM decided to keep annual bonuses flat across its investment bank segment for the 2019 year.

Banks around the world who are supposed to benefit from rising asset prices thanks to the central banks' injecting unprecedented liquidity into markets – unveiled last year, the most significant round of job cuts in four years.

Banks are slashing jobs at record speeds in response to a synchronized global slowdown and adoption of automation.

JPM has cut more than 7,000 jobs from the consumer unit in the four years through 2018, and it's likely the cuts will continue.

Fifty banks in 2019 slashed upwards of 78,000 jobs, the most since 91,448 announced in 2015.

Morgan Stanley last month fired 2% of its workforce, or approximately 1,500 workers, due to slowdown fears.

Earlier this month, Barclays Plc slashed 100 senior staff at its investment bank unit. These cuts were primarily made in Europe and the U.S.

Goldman Sachs has had its fair share of layoffs and pays reduction in 2019.
