deaths divided by total population = percentage of mortality.

171/8235=0.0207650273 x 100 = ~2.07%

if the mortality rate was 55% then

4529 deaths/ 8235 cases = 0.5499696418 x 100 = 54.9%

you are calculating the percentage of people who have died according to patients who no longer require treatment. not the percentage of people who have died in the entire population.
