LISBON, Portugal (AP) — European countries on Thursday stepped up efforts to contain the virus infecting central China, sending a plane to evacuate hundreds of Europeans from the country and halting even more flights to China. Italian authorities kept some 7,000 people on a cruise ship while they checked for a possible infection.

Trump to appoint White House official to take on human trafficking

President Trump will appoint a White House domestic policy adviser to focus exclusively on reducing human trafficking, according to a top administration official. Trump will sign the order Friday at a two-hour summit on human trafficking at the White House, where White House senior adviser Ivanka Trump is scheduled to speak. Attorney General William Barr, survivors of human trafficking, and representatives of tribal and local governments will be in attendance. During a visit to Atlanta last month, Ivanka Trump said the White House was committed to ending trafficking, which she likened to "modern day slavery."

The position will be created by executive order, and the appointee will coordinate activities between the White House and federal agencies, Domestic Policy Director Joe Grogan said Friday in a call with reporters. Grogan praised Ivanka Trump's work on the issue and said that her office would join the efforts of the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Justice, and the State Department, a senior administration official said. A candidate has yet to be publicly identified.

Some prominent anti-trafficking organizations have criticized the summit and said they will not attend, though others have said they will. Refugees International President Eric Schwartz, a former Barack Obama appointee, said in statement that policies pursued by the Trump White House endangered victims of human trafficking by reversing legal protections for them. He cited immigration rules limiting the decreased number of special visas for trafficking victims looking to legalize their immigration status and access services.

(Reuters) - A growing number of countries around the world are evacuating or planning to evacuate diplomatic staff and citizens from parts of China hit by the new coronavirus. Following are some countries’ evacuation plans, and how they aim to manage the health risk from those who are returning.

• Hundreds of South Koreans flown home on a charter flight from China were greeted with welcome signs on Friday as they arrived at quarantine centers where nearby residents had staged protests only a day before. The 368 South Koreans were transported to two facilities in Asan and Jincheon, cities about 80 km (50 miles) south of the capital Seoul, where they will be isolated. The aircraft carrying the evacuees from Wuhan, the epicenter of the virus outbreak in China, landed in Seoul earlier.

• A third chartered flight repatriating Japanese people arrived from Wuhan on Friday, bringing the number of repatriated nationals to 565. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Japan is making arrangements to repatriate all Japanese who want to return from Wuhan and surrounding areas, but that a fourth plane is unlikely to be dispatched this week.

• A plane carrying 83 British and 27 European Union nationals from Wuhan, the capital of Hubei, landed in Britain on Friday. The returning Britons will be quarantined for 14 days at an NHS facility in northwest England.
