Top 5 Intelligence Agencies You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

The NSA was once jokingly referred to as No Such Agency because of its penchant for secrecy. The National Reconnaissance Office, founded in 1961, was only declassified in 1992—before that, it didn’t officially exist. To show how much things have changed, today both of those agencies have children’s websites. (As does the FBI, CIA, and DIA.) Not every part of the intelligence community, however, has reached such lofty heights as offering lesson plans for schoolteachers. Here are a few lesser-known arms of United States intelligence:

National Underwater Reconnaissance Office

It took thirteen years for the public to learn about the existence of the National Reconnaissance Office, by way of a short piece in the Washington Post. The National Underwater Reconnaissance Office, on the other hand, remained a secret for twenty-nine years. Where the NRO began as a joint CIA-U.S. Air Force agency, the NURO is the intersection of the CIA and U.S. Navy.

On 31 January, the United Kingdom became the first country to leave the European Union after more than four decades in the bloc and its preceding organisations, marking the start of a new era as well as potentially spelling the beginning of new challenges for the political and economic entity comprised of 27 remaining states.

The president of France’s National Rally party, Marine Le Pen, said that the day of Britain’s historic exit from the European Union on 31 January should signify the beginning of the formation of a “European alliance of nations”, something that the politician claimed Europeans overwhelmingly wish for.

“This European Union will go down in history as a resounding failure!” Marine Le Pen wrote on her Twitter in French.

‘An era where it has never not been about drugs’

Professor Anne Harrington’s new book tackles the rise of biological psychiatry

Franklin L. Ford Professor of the History of Science and director of undergraduate studies, Anne Harrington, has watched the field of mental health evolve over decades, and its struggles to reach a consensus on basics such as the root causes of and best treatments for mental illnesses. Since the days of Sigmund Freud, various factions of psychiatry have battled to define the discipline.

In her latest book, “Mind Fixers: Psychiatry’s Troubled Search for the Biology of Mental Illness,” Harrington chronicles the fall of the Freudians and the rise of biological psychiatrists, and with them the explosion of Prozac, Xanax, and Big Pharma’s pioneering technologies to map the brain. What never arrived: the results biological psychiatrists had promised.

Harrington spoke to the Gazette about the stumbles, the Prozac revolution, and how her own students provided the impetus to write the book.

House Sneaks Green New Deal Spending Into Infrastructure Framework

The carrot-on-a-string is fixing the things that everyone knows desperately need fixing. The real payload is zero carbon, environmental justice, green transportation, alternative energy. ⁃ TN Editor

Today, the Chairs of three U.S. House Committees released a framework for a five-year, $760 billion investment in infrastructure that would address some of the country’s most urgent infrastructure needs, from addressing the massive maintenance backlog, to designing safer streets, to putting the U.S. on a path toward zero emissions from the transportation sector and increasing resiliency. The framework put forth by Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Frank Pallone (D-NJ), and Ways and Means Committee Chair Richard Neal (D-MA) would bolster the Federal role in order to help communities around the country undertake transformative projects that are smarter, safer, and made to last.

Among other things, the framework outlines major investments, including those in highways, rail, and transit systems, airports, ports and harbors, wastewater and drinking water infrastructure, brownfields, and broadband.
