Turnbull publisher names Morrison office in 'massive' book breach
Malcolm Turnbull’s publisher has fired off a legal warning to a top aide in the Morrison government claiming a “massive” breach of copyright over the former prime minister’s new book.
Furious at the spread of pirated copies of the e-book to people within the government, publishing company Hardie Grant sent the demand on Saturday night claiming “malicious conduct” by the staff member in the Prime Minister’s Office.
The move came hours after the publisher was alerted to the distribution of the electronic version of the book to government staffers and at least one Liberal MP, days before the e-book becomes available to paying readers on Monday.
Hardie Grant publisher Sandy Grant said the e-book version of the new memoir, A Bigger Picture, had been hacked or pirated and the firm was taking legal action to bring the problem under control.
“What drew this to our attention was the distribution of the pirated edition from an address from within the PMO, sent to people who reported the illegal edition,” he said.
“Piracy is a problem for bestselling books and our lawyers have taken immediate action to make it clear we intend to take action against the person seemingly distributing A Bigger Picture widely and illegally, as a well as any site sharing the file.”
The publisher became concerned about a copyright breach on Thursday when a leaked copy of the book was obtained by a journalist at News Corp Australia’s The Australian.
Only on Saturday did Mr Turnbull and the publishing company discover the spread of the e-book, with one email claiming a person had sent it to "millions" of others.
Mr Grant said the distribution of the e-book “makes me wonder” about the News Corp access to the memoir.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has brushed off questions about Mr Turnbull’s memoir in recent days, saying he is “not interested” in it and focused on responding to the COVID-19 virus.
But the book is a political issue for the Prime Minister and his office, given it says Mr Morrison played a “double game” in the leadership turmoil that cost Mr Turnbull his job in August 2018 and also claims he weakened the government with his handling of tax reform as treasurer in early 2016.
