Japan Set To Release 1.2 Million Tons Of Radioactive Fukushima Water Into Ocean, Causing "Immeasurable Damage"

Just in case a global viral pandemic, whose sources are still unclear and apparently now include human feces, wasn't enough, the global outrage meter is about to go "up to eleven" with Japan now set to flood the world's oceans with radioactive water.

In a move that will surely prompt a furious response from Greta Thunberg's ghost writers (unless of course it doesn't fit a very narrow agenda), a panel of experts advising Japan’s government on a disposal method for the millions of tons of radioactive water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant on Friday recommended releasing it into the ocean. And, as Reuters notes, based on past practice it is likely the government will accept the recommendation.

Tokyo Electric, or Tepco, has collected nearly 1.2 million tonnes of contaminated water from the cooling pipes used to keep fuel cores from melting since the plant was crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The water is stored in huge tanks that crowd the site.

On Jan. 29, the Beijing government sent a working team to Huanggang, a city with over 6.3 million people located just 30 miles east of the coronavirus epidemic in Wuhan in the Hubei province.

Hindu Mahasabha Leader Shot Dead in Indian State of Uttar Pradesh

This is the second murder of a right-wing Hindu political party leader of late in Uttar Pradesh. In October 2019, national president of the Hindu Samaj Party Kamlesh Tiwari was also shot dead in the city of Lucknow.

A leader of the party Hindu Mahasabha (All India) from northern Uttar Pradesh was shot dead by two assailants on motorcycles in the heart of the state capital Lucknow on Sunday morning. Ranjeet Bachchan, a resident of the Gorakhpur district and home to the state Chief Yogi Adityanath, was on a morning walk along with his brother when the assailants opened fire at them.

While the politician died on the spot, his brother has been admitted to hospital in critical condition.

"Forensic experts are scanning the spot. We have been scanning CCTVs and probing the case from all angles. The culprits will be behind bars soon", Deputy Commissioner of Police Dinesh Singh stated.

According to the authorities, the assailants attempted to take Bachchan’s gold chain and cell phone during the incident, however, the motives behind the crime are yet to be determined.

Hindu Mahasabha is one of the oldest political parties in India, formed in 1915 to protect the rights of the Hindu majority in the country.

First Death From Wuhan Coronavirus Outside China Reported in Philippines - WHO

Chinese media earlier claimed that the so-called Wuhan coronavirus, as of Saturday, has killed 304 people and infected over 14,000 on mainland China. While the Chinese death toll continues to increase, the first fatal case outside of the country was reported on Sunday.

The Philippines health watchdog said early on Sunday that a 44-year-old man, a Wuhan resident, died on 1 February after contracting the new Wuhan coronavirus pneumonia-type infection, also known as 2019-nCoV.

According to the nation's Department of Health, there were now two confirmed cases of infection in the Philippines, including the deceased Chinese national.

4 More Military Bases Tapped to House Coronavirus Evacuees

Four U.S. bases are on standby to assist the Department of Health and Human Services with housing those fleeing the novel coronavirus threat, Pentagon officials said Saturday.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper approved an HHS request Saturday to house 1,000 people who may require quarantine following overseas travel, according to a Defense Department statement.

"HHS officials requested the Defense Department to provide several facilities capable of housing at least 250 people in individual rooms through Feb. 29, 2020," officials said.

Tapped for the contingency were The 168th Regiment, Regional Training Institute, in Fort Carson, Colorado; Travis Air Force Base, California; Lackland Air Force Base, Texas; and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.

March Air Reserve Base in California has already taken in some 200 Americans evacuated from China, the epicenter of the new disease. The Associated Press reported that those travelers are subject to a two-week quarantine on the base.

Under the new agreement, the Defense Department would provide housing while HHS would provide medical and standard care, transportation and security for evacuees.

"DOD personnel will not be directly in contact with the evacuees and evacuees will not have access to any base location other than their assigned housing," officials said in the statement. "In accordance with CDC guidelines, all evacuees will be monitored for a period of 14 days. Should routine monitoring of the evacuees identify ill individuals, HHS has procedures in place to transport them to a local civilian hospital."

Using the bases as quarantine centers, if needed, will not have a negative impact on military readiness or other critical operations, officials said.

"The department's primary responsibility is the safety of our force, our families and our base communities," the release stated. "DOD personnel will follow guidance in the memorandum, 'Force Health Protection Guidance for the Novel Coronavirus Outbreak,' to reduce risk."

Late Friday, officials with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command told Military.com that U.S. troops were being directed to leave China, and that travel to the country had been banned.

The federally ordered quarantine at March was the first such federal order since 1963, the AP reported, highlighting the gravity of the threat posed by the new disease.

To date, more than 250 people have died from novel coronavirus, and more than 12,000 cases have been confirmed.
