"WHO cracks down on social media giants amid dangerous ā€˜infodemicā€™ spreading fake information about coronavirus online.

As coronavirus spreads around the world, the WHO has focused on stopping an ā€œinfodemicā€ it argues is also putting people at risk. Hereā€™s what to watch for.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a crackdown on social media giants including Google, Twitter and Facebook to combat the dangerous spread of ā€œmisinformationā€ about the deadly coronavirus online.

The outbreak of the novel virus in China has sparked a ā€œmassive infodemicā€ with an ā€œoverabundance of information ā€“ some accurate and some not ā€“ (making) it hard for people to find trustworthy sources and reliable guidance when they need itā€, the agency warned on Sunday.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the agency was now working with Google and several social media giants to make sure people were getting the facts.

ā€œWe have worked with Google to make sure people searching for information about coronavirus see WHO information at the top of their search results,ā€ he said in his opening remarks at the UN health agencyā€™s executive board meeting in Geneva on Monday.

ā€œSocial media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Tencent and Tiktok have also taken steps to limit the spread of misinformation,ā€ he said."

Wouldn't want coronavirus spreading any of that fake news now would we.
