Hemp was a threat to both the timber and petroleum industry.

Almost everything petroleum could be replaced with hemp. Fuel, paint, plastics etc.

The big dogs that controlled the timber industry also controlled the newspapers.

Through their newspapers they associated cannabis with hemp to enact prohibition. Reefer Madness.

This later benefitted the pharmaceutical industry since cannabis could replace a bunch of different synthetic drugs.
