Jeff Shiffrin, father to Olympic alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin and a native of Dover, N.J., unexpectedly passed away Sunday.
Skiracing.com reports “Shiffrin died following an accident at his home in Edwards, Colo., on Sunday, Feb. 2. Shiffrin was transported to a Denver-area hospital and was surrounded by family during his final hours, including son Taylor, daughter Mikaela and wife Eileen, who returned home from Europe."
Mikaela Shiffrin announced the death of her father Monday on Twitter.
My family is heartbroken beyond comprehension about the unexpected passing of my kindhearted, loving, caring, patient, wonderful father. Our mountains, our ocean, our sunrise, our heart, our soul, our everything. He taught us so many valuable lessons …
But above everything else, he taught us the golden rule: be nice, think first. This is something I will carry with me forever. He was the firm foundation of our family and we miss him terribly …
Thank you, from the depths of my heart, for respecting my family’s privacy as we grieve during this unimaginable and devastating time.”—Courtesy of Mikaela’s Team
To be clear, Mikaela Shiffrin is not a New Jersey native. She was born in Colorado and raised in New Hampshire. But her father, Jeff, had considerable Garden State roots, as NJ Advance Media’s Steve Politi wrote before the 2018 Olympics:
Jeff graduated from Dover High in 1972 where, according to the Dover Historical Society, he was captain of the ski team. He went to Dartmouth College, met his future wife Eileen while working as an anesthesiologist at a Boston-area hospital, and the two competitive skiers immersed their kids in the sport soon after they took their first steps.
The 24-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin won Olympic gold medals at the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia and at the 2018 games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. In 2014, at the age of 18, she became the youngest ever to win an Olympic gold medal in slalom, according to 9News in Denver. Shiffrin began skiing at age 2 and made her World Cup debut at age 15.
Skiracing.com reports that service arrangements for Jeff Shiffrin are forthcoming and that Mikaela Shiffrin’s “return to the alpine World Cup tour is indefinite at this time.”
