Society assumed we were just benefiting from the natural advancement of technology - better, faster, and more convenient each decade. But what if this was part of a long-term plan to move all information and interactions to a global network so they could:

a) Monitor anyone and everyone, and all trends across the population

b) Record everything, and sift through it for what is useful: public perceptions that can be manipulated, potential blackmail material, new opportunities for schemes and wealth, cutting edge research, corporate planning, new software being written, new inventions being designed, etc.

c) Analyze all data about the population with supercomputers in a thousand different ways, plus AI

d) Track everyone in realtime, and their patterns over time. Not just their physical location, but their purchases, moods, interests, addictions, sex life, careers, sleep patterns, spirituality, everything.

e) And eventually even mentally/emotionally program the users through each person's interaction with his own personal device, which he keeps within arm's reach at all times.
