TESTER TO FBI: ASSIGN FULL-TIME AGENTS TO BOTH HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND INDIAN COUNTRY IN MONTANA

FBI received more than $161 million in additional funding for detection, investigation, and prosecution in fiscal year 2019

U.S. Senator Jon Tester sent a letter last week to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray expressing deep concern over the FBI’s decision to reassign the only Montana agent focused on human trafficking.

“I write to express my concerns about the reassignment of the only Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent dedicated to investigating and preventing human trafficking in Montana,” Tester said. “While I fully support and advocate for additional resources for Indian Country, I do not believe this move is appropriate. Instead, I urge the FBI to reassign a full-time agent to human trafficking cases and an additional full-time agent to focus on crime in Indian Country in Montana.”

Tester added, “Splitting an agent’s time between two major law enforcement priorities hinders their ability to fully deliver on either.”

The FBI recently reassigned the only Montana agent assigned to investigate human trafficking to split his time between trafficking and cases involving Indian Country, despite a $161 million increase in funding for detection, investigation, and prosecution of crimes in Fiscal Year 2019. This raised concerns among Montanans that the move could hinder attempts to both combat human trafficking and reduce crime in Indian Country.

Lawmakers aim at sex crimes, human trafficking

HELENA – Missoula detective Guy Baker investigated and caught a pimp for the first time in 2010, and the man was prosecuted for human trafficking.

But, he didn’t get a prison sentence.

The following year, the pimp, Terrence Edwards, was charged with forcing two more women into sexual slavery. This time, Edwards served five years for his crimes. Shortly after his release, he started pimping again.

“Unless they’re in prison or dead, (pimps) will find a way to exploit young women,” Baker said.

Edwards was sentenced to 30 years in prison last year for human sex trafficking.

Policymakers at the state’s Legislature are considering a number of bills this session that attempt to close gaps that allow abusers and traffickers to walk free. Proposals include adding stricter regulations for massage parlors (which can sometimes be fronts for brothels), harsher penalties for sex traffickers and eliminating the statutes of limitations for prosecuting perpetrators of child sexual abuse.

Montana has been working on this issue since 2013, with legislation enacted that strengthened the laws dealing with trafficking and others that launched public awareness campaigns about the issue. During the 2015 session, Rep. Kimberly Dudik, D-Missoula carried House Bill 89 at the request of Attorney General Tim Fox, which altered human trafficking policy. Lawmakers want to build on that progress this session.

Day by day, night after night

Blinded by the neon light

Hurry here, hustlin' there

No one's got the time to spare

Money's tight, nothin' free

Tooth for tooth, eye for an eye

Sell your soul just to buy, buy, buy

Beggin' for a dollar, stealin' a dime

Come on, can't you see that I—

Save the strong lose the weak

Never turning the other cheek

Trust nobody, don't be no fool

Whatever happened to the golden rule?

We got stranded, caught in the crossfire

‘Traitor’: Rand Paul blows up liberal minds by ‘identifying’ whistleblower on Senate floor with clever stunt

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul made waves with both Republicans and Democrats when he named the whistleblower who originally accused US President Donald Trump of quid pro quo with Ukraine.

Speaking on the Senate floor on Tuesday, Paul made it clear he was still upset over Chief Justice Roberts refusing to ask a question from him last week regarding the whistleblower whose report kicked off the current impeachment trial.

“The presiding officer declines to read the question as submitted,” Roberts told Paul after reading the question to himself.

Paul took his time speaking on Tuesday as his opportunity to finally ask his question, inquiring if Schiff was “aware” of reports that one his staffers had allegedly had conversations with the whistleblower about impeaching the president long before any allegations of quid pro quo were made. He said the whistleblower’s name in his question, though he did not specifically identify him as one.

Paul stood next to a sign with the text of his question, which also named the whistleblower. Though Democrats have worked to protect the identity of the man, he has been named numerous times on social media and in news reports.

Despite the identity being an open secret already, the faux outrage was still in full display from Trump critics with Paul being labeled a “traitor” and even being accused of trying to get the whistleblower killed.

“This is just a malicious attempt to get someone killed, so that @RandPaul can combine his hatred of the intelligence community with a nice opportunity to suck up to Donald Trump,” author Tom Nicholas tweeted.
