>Is this a contamination issue, or something endemic to Proton Pump Inhibitors?

All Proton Pump Inhibitors are dangerous to body for long term use because they block magnesium absorption and will lead to hypomagnesiumia, which is life threatening especially for the elderly.

This class of medications were approved for short term use (weeks) and never intended for long term use, but the problem is that people’s bodies become dependent on them.

Most often in older people we don’t make enough acid shut the upper valve so you get heart burn and think you have too much acid when it’s just the opposite. The way doctors used to treat these symptoms was to fix the problem by giving something that would make more acid like betaine HCL. This “cure” used to be marketed under the name “pepsin”. Now you know where the name Pepcid came from, but does fix the problem.
