Q
True.
Several years ago I knew an older liberal couple and had occasion to interact with them frequently. In their mind everything OTHER people did was to gain power, wealth, fame. In their mind everything THEY did was because they were oppressed and disadvantaged.
(They were middle class people, both retired schoolteachers, both hard working and elderly, but in no way deprived of a comfortable middle class standard of living. They really did believe that there is an evil upper class out to screw everybody, responsible for every income inequality. Kind of the 1960s labor union mentality. If rich people were not checked by big government, then "little people" as they conceived themselves would get screwed out of everything.
They did not really believe in the American dream where every person can rise based upon their merits and hard work.
It was difficult being around them. Their beliefs were inflexible and wrong.
Their beliefs caused a kind of bitter jealousy that sometimes showed through the facade in things they said and looks they gave.
One time I had them over for dinner. I was tempoarily in a rented home at the time. It wasn't my life style, but they saw this rented home as indicia of 'privilege'. Over dinner the man proudly declared that he was a 'socialist'. Conversation stopped dead. What could one say? Never had them over again. He was pasting an interpretation on the world that was false and that divided people.
