The original reference is to Shakespeare’s The Tempest and it’s an expression of wonder, far removed from the bleak dystopian future of Huxley.

 

In titling his novel “Brave New World,” Huxley invested the phrase with a darkness entirely absent from the original context. It perhaps takes an Englishman to use irony thus…
