I'll add: Long distance transmission lines need higher voltage to reduce resistive losses. Resistive losses are proportional to current. Higher voltage with lower current allows more of the transmitted power to reach the destination without heating up the conductors.

Internet over power lines already exists as a (very bad) technology, >10 years ago. IIRC, ARRL sued over it and internet over power lines lost. Reason was it creates a whole lot of spurious noisy RF emissions. Case was in Texas I believe?
