Something I've often thought to post but never really sure of the connection or how it'll be received. Probably should save for the wee hours of the morning bread, but I just can't stay up all night any more. Anyhow, here goes, take from it what you will.

EX mother-in-law, now long deceased, had been born and raised in the Ukraine. Family were Cossacks. Greek Orthodox Catholic. Talked about how brother and father were killed in the resistance. Went underground at age 17, changed her name, got through university. Became a teacher, got married, had child under Russian control of Ukraine.

Then when Nazis took over in WW2, husband and child killed; she was put in concentration camp, eventually sent to a work farm in Austria. When war ended, immigrated to Argentina, then Venezuala, then the states. She would only tell bits and pieces at a time, but over the years I gathered that she was not fond of Jews. She would say in regard to them and the Holocaust:

"Ach. MY people were slaves. Why we no hear how MY people were killed? Why we only hear Jews?"

I was young then. I wish I would've picked her brain more. But then again, she was the type who would button up if she thought you were trying too hard to pry. But what a smart woman, I see now, in retrospect. RIP, Nadia. o7

I know these things, Anons. What I don't know, and wish I did, was what did my former mother in law know about this?

She knew something, of that, I am certain. But took her knowledge to the grave.
