I think history is much grander, more complex, and yet simpler in a way.
There was a worldwide culture that coexisted in relative peace, they created the "Grecco Roman" (Etruscan) architecture we have around the world, they inherited much knowledge from the previous high civilization (call them Atlanteans or the megalith builders), they were overthrown either by cataclysm, war or maybe disease, the Phoenecians took over most of the prime real estate, added a lot of maritime themes, sea shell and mermaid motifs and claimed they built it.
It happened much more recently than people may think, they want us to believe we were surfs and peasants for centuries of dark ages, but we wuz kangs. (kek)
