Im having a bad case of Winnaminitis…

Marked by symptoms such an uncontrollable urge to stand and salute Old Glory, thumbs continually upraised, random recitations of such passages as, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal and endowed with certain and inalienable rights. That among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

I’ve also been pondering this whole swamp-draining operation…

Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. A creation of big government, yet actually performs many useful purposes. Supplies/facilitates water storage for perhaps 40 million people, including about 90% of Las Vegas’s water needs. Supplies tremendous amounts of electricity. Furnishes water recreation and is a tourist attraction in its own right. Many cities, farms and critical infrastructure are downstream for hundreds of miles.

But suppose this thing we call the Swamp is a layer, say, 20 feet deep over this entire body of water, with all it’s stinking putridness a result of graft, greed, theft and other personal wretchedness. So all the shallow estuaries, bays and waterfront properties are either feeding, or frolicking in, the muck layer.

But the rest of Lake Mead is still the necessary source of drinking water for all those millions. And whatever trace amounts of swampwater pumped to all those people can be fairly easily cleaned out by municipal water treatment plants.

But further suppose it is possible to shut off or divert all or most water flow into Lake Mead. (Remove sources of money, power and every other corruptible commodity)

Then also remove sources of “nutrients” such as those who supply graft and bribes or free tickets to expensive entertainment, or anything else with a price tag attached somewhere. Kind of like wanting your MTV – get your money for nothing and your chicks for free. That’s the way you do it…

Then consider the effect of the desert sun and its disinfecting sunlight. Day after day, for months/years. Pretty soon the bays and estuaries are just rings on Navaho sandstone. The waterfront mansions sit abandoned on desolate hillsides.

Eventually, the lake recedes to become a little more than a wide spot of the Colorado River. Still performing its most necessary purpose of supplying water to farms and thirsty millions.

Now, the vaunted Hoover Dam is just a dry mass of concrete. At this time, if still necessary, it can be demolished more or less safely and also avoiding severe downstream destruction and untold turmoil to millions.

So maybe this may be why it seems to take so long from the downstream and distant perspective of Needles, California. We want, with facts and truth for support, the Swamp draining and disinfection but maybe there are other factors to this process we are not able to know at this time.
