Trump Nominates Gold Advocate to Federal Reserve

President Donald Trump has formally nominated Judy Shelton, a liberty-minded advocate of sound money, to one of the open spots on the Federal Reserve Board. It is possible she is being considered as Fed chief, sources say. The news sparked celebrations among free market-oriented economists and patriots, who spoke of adding some intellectual diversity to the board. But her nomination has also stoked concerns among establishment figures from the media to Congress. Trump has repeatedly expressed support for an honest monetary system, but this may be his most significant move aimed at actually bringing about some degree of monetary reform. Now the battle heads to the U.S. Senate.

Massive brawl involving hundreds of locals kills 8, turns southern Kazakhstan village into warzone (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

Dozens of homes were set ablaze and at least 8 people were killed as almost 400 villagers clashed with police and each other in southern Kazakhstan, prompting authorities to send in reinforcements and install roadblocks.

A massive brawl broke out on Friday in the outskirts of Masanchi, a settlement close to the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border. The initial call to local police reported 70 people taking part in skirmishes, and several patrols were dispatched to the location. Some “provocateurs” were filming the brawl as it unfolded, spreading the videos via messaging apps, Kazakhstan’s Interior Minister Yerlan Turgumbayev later told journalists

The nightmare of airport facial recognition

[TSA Biometrics Roadmap, September 2018. Note that face ID will be used for all air travelers and that all use of physical ID credentials is “phasing out” in favor of facial recognition and digital tokens on mobile devices.]

Airports of the future: surveillance by design

As we’ve seen in the ongoing debate over biometric identification of travelers at Sea-Tac Airport, and as we’ve seen before elsewhere, airlines and government agencies want to pretend that each of their initiatives to identify and track travelers is a discrete, limited project, not part of any common agenda for government and commercial surveillance.

Don’t believe a word of this soothing blather. These measures are part of a conscious, deliberate, and (in their internal communications) explicit plan to deploy pervasive, integrated common-use infrastructure and data sharing for government and commercial identification and tracking purposes throughout airports and each step of an air traveler’s journey. The airline/airport/government consensus is on surveillance by design, not privacy by design.

Coast Guard, partners apprehend 9 smugglers, seize $46.2 million in cocaine

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Coast Guard, United Kingdom Royal Navy and U.S. law enforcement partners seized 1,400 kilograms (3,086) pounds of cocaine and detained nine suspected smugglers following the interdiction of two separate drug smuggling events in the Caribbean Sea Jan. 24 and Jan. 30, 2020.

The seized drug shipments are estimated to have a wholesale value of more than $46.2 million.

The interdiction was a result of an international, multi-agency law enforcement effort in support of Operation Unified Resolve, Operation Caribbean Guard, Campaign Martillo (a joint, interagency, 20-nation collaborative counter narcotic effort), and the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force (CCSF), and will be prosecuted by the U.S. Federal District Court for the District of Puerto Rico.

‘Hundreds of convicted terrorists are out on the streets’

Terrorism expert Nikita Malik on the homegrown Islamist threat.

On Sunday, Sudesh Amman stabbed two people in a terror attack in Streatham, south-east London. Amman had previously been convicted of terror offences, but was released from prison a week before his attack, having served just half of his sentence. Around two months ago, Usman Khan killed two people on a terrorist rampage on London Bridge. Khan had been convicted over a terror plot to blow up the London Stock Exchange. He had also been released early from prison.

These recent attacks have raised serious questions about our ability to prevent acts of Islamist terror. Terror laws, sentencing guidelines and deradicalisation programmes have all come under fire. spiked spoke to Nikita Malik, director of the Centre on Radicalisation and Terror, part of the Henry Jackson Society, to find out more about the Islamist threat and what we can do about it.

PI and Liberty submit a new legal challenge after MI5 admits that vast troves of personal data was held in “ungoverned spaces”

Privacy International (PI) and Liberty have filed on Friday a complaint with the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT), the judicial body that oversees the intelligence agencies, against MI5 in relation to how they handle vast troves of personal data.

In mid-2019, MI5 admitted, during a case brought by Liberty, that personal data was being held in “ungoverned spaces”. Much about these ‘ungoverned spaces’, and how they would effectively be “governed” in the future, remained unclear. At the moment, they are understood to be a ‘technical environment’ where personal data of unknown numbers of individuals was being ‘handled’. The use of ‘technical environment’ suggests something more than simply a compilation of a few datasets or databases.

Horowitz: MS-13 members suspected in murder of witness after NY bail ‘reform’ law forced disclosure of witness address

Not only have numerous people been murdered or maimed as a result of violent criminals being released without bail in New York, there is now the first casualty from the other horrible provision of the jailbreak law.

On Wednesday, 36-year-old Wilmer Maldonado was found bludgeoned to death behind an abandoned home in Nassau County, Long Island. Who was Maldanado? A victim of and a witness to a heinous MS-13 gang beating that local police now believe got him killed. Why? Because thanks to the new bail law, not only are violent gangsters out on the streets, their defense lawyers have almost instant access to the contact information and identities of the victims and witnesses

US Strikes al-Shabaab in Somalia, Wounding 2 Terrorists

The United States and the Somalian government coordinated to launch two air strikes against al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate, the U.S. military said on Saturday.

The air strikes targeted terrorists and a compound in the vicinity of Jilib on Feb. 6. Initial assessments released on Feb. 8 concluded that an al-Shabaab facility was severely degraded and two al-Shabaab terrorists were wounded.

“Airstrikes are one way we help prevent al-Shabaab from building a safe haven to plan deadly attacks against the U.S. homeland and East African partners,” said U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Bradford Gering, deputy director of operations for U.S. Africa Command, in a statement.

“We currently assess no civilians were injured or killed as a result of these airstrikes,” U.S. Africa Command said.

Does this mean white nationalists and neo-Nazis are going to get state funding and be provided with arms?

The FBI director testified today that racially motivated extremism is as much of a threat to national security as ISIS.

The announcement comes two weeks after the arrest of neo-Nazis who discussed firing into the crowd at a pro-gun rally in Virginia. https://t.co/9APyT6jmny
