‘End that son of a b*tch’: Duterte confirms US-Philippines military collaboration agreement is toast

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte is “terminating” the Visiting Forces Agreement, which provides legal immunity to US military drills, in retaliation for the US canceling the visa of a political ally and fellow drug-warrior.

“The president said he is terminating the VFA,” Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told ABS-CBN News on Friday. “I asked for clarification and he said he is not changing his decision.” The agreement provides legal immunity for US soldiers conducting military exercises in the Philippines.

Enraged by the US decision to cancel the visa of former police chief and Senator Roland dela Rosa last month, Duterte had given Washington a month to fix its ‘mistake,’ refusing to back down even as other members of his government urged him to reconsider.

“I’m warning you… if you won’t do the correction on this, I will terminate the… Visiting Forces Agreement,” Duterte said last month, daring the US to call his bluff.

Washington had reportedly canceled dela Rosa’s visa over his record of extrajudicial killings while serving as Duterte's first police chief. In that role, he was responsible for carrying out the president's heavy-handed anti-drug campaign – much closer to a literal “war on drugs” than the US policy by that name – which has left thousands dead and sparked international outcry.

Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin attempted to argue against cutting off the VFA on Thursday, insisting that the $550 million-plus in security aid received from the US since 2016 – along with intelligence, training, and the ability to deter Chinese “aggression” – outweighed any reasons the president might have to scrap the agreement. A “chilling effect on our economic relations” could result if the Philippines starts backing out of its alliance with the US, Locsin suggested.

Canadian Scientist At Center Of Chinese Bio-Espionage Probe Found Dead In Africa?

Update (1135ET): It seems that Mr. Plummer made a habit of getting the biological material he was working on "stolen," as we found a report from 2009 in the Winnepeg Free Press that details the theft of 22 vials of biological material was "confirmed by scientific director Dr. Frank Plummer."

Plummer, allegedly, alerted authorities to the missing material on the same day a former vaccine researcher was arrested by FBI special agents after U.S. Customs discovered the vials stuffed in a glove in the trunk of his car at the Manitoba-North Dakota border crossing.

Some of the vials included genes from the deadly Ebola virus, but local scientists say the material is not infectious.

But more than a week after the theft came to light, police said no one from the lab has reported the incident.

Plummer has said the researcher signed a form declaring he did not steal anything from the lab and understood he was not allowed to. The national lab does not conduct searches of staff when they exit the lab and does not routinely take inventory of the thousands of vials containing non-infectious biological substances.

However, court documents allege the former researcher stole the vials on his last day of work at the virology lab in January because "he did not want to start his research over from the beginning when he entered into his next fellowship" with the National Institutes of Health at the Biodefense Research Laboratory in Maryland.

‘Free speech only for Americans!’ US senators threaten Twitter with sanctions unless it censors Iranian leadership

US senators have demanded that Twitter ban the accounts of two top Iranian officials, or face the wrath of US sanctions, in a thinly veiled threat to naïve free speech-believers who might fall out of favor with Washington next.

Despite an Obama-era provision exempting certain internet platforms – including social media – from a raft of sanctions imposed on Iran, the four Republican lawmakers insisted in a joint letter that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif enjoyed no such protection, demanding that Twitter ban them immediately.

“Twitter is aware of these accounts and their links to the Iranian regime,” yet “continues to provide [them] Internet-based communications services,” the senators said, calling it a “sanctionable offense.”

The senators argued that by allowing Iranian officials to share their country’s position with the rest of the world, Twitter was providing a “service” in violation of an executive order signed by President Trump last June prohibiting Americans from any exchange with Tehran.

The letter was signed by Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Marco Rubio (R-FL), all of whom have taken a hard line on the Islamic Republic. Twitter has yet to respond to the blatant demand of selective censorship.

The threat follows a concerted campaign across several social media platforms last month to purge dozens of accounts affiliated with sanctioned individuals and entities – including Syrian, Iranian and Venezuelan officials, as well as average citizens in some cases – hardly without any pressure from Washington.

Macron Urges European Nuclear Arms Control Initiative To Combat "Unrestrained Arms Race

At a moment major arms control treaties remain on the brink of collapse, all eyes were on French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday for a key speech in Paris unveiling the future of France's nuclear weapons. The EU country is one of the five "Nuclear Weapons States" under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and is now the only post-Brexit EU nuclear power.

Macron warned of a new arms race impacting Europe, especially after last Spring both Russia and the United States formally suspended their participation in the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) ahead of its expiration. Europe "cannot remain spectators" in any new arms race, he said. He proposed that the Europeans step up with "an international agenda of arms control" at a moment of heightened proliferation fears.
