Chief Brian Hastings Takes Command of Nation’s Busiest Border Sector

Border Patrol officials announced this week that Chief Patrol Agent Brian Hastings will serve as the chief patrol agent of the nation’s busiest sector. Hastings is completing a tour as chief of the Law Enforcement Operations Directorate at Border Patrol headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Newly appointed Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott appointed Chief Brian Hastings to leat the Rio Grande Valley Sector in Sout Texas. The sector is the busiest sector along the U.S. southwest border in terms of drug seizures and the apprehension of migrants illegally crossing the border. Hastings takes command of the sector on March 15, according to information obtained from Border Patrol officials.

“Supporting the men and women of the RGV Sector, all of whom accomplished amazing things to secure this nation during a time of an unprecedented crisis, is my priority,” Chief Hastings said in a written statement. “RGV agents have been at the epicenter of the crisis throughout and they performed those duties in an outstanding manner.”

Hastings will have command of nine Border Patrol stations and will be responsible for securing 277 river miles along the Texas-Mexico border. In addition, he maintains responsibility for 317 miles of Texas coastline with the Gulf of Mexico. The sector covers 34 South Texas counties.

During Fiscal Year 2019, which ended on September 30, 2019, agents in the Rio Grande Valley Sector apprehended 339,135 migrants — nearly 40 percent of all migrants apprehended in the nine southwestern Border Patrol sectors, according to the Southwest Border Migration report. Those included 211,631 Family Unit Aliens, 34,523 Unaccompanied Alien Children, and 92,981 single alien adults.

During the first two months of the current fiscal year, Rio Grande Valley Sector agents apprehended an additional 9,379 illegal aliens who crossed the border between ports of entry. This includes 2,854 Family Units, 1,106 migrant children, and 5,779 single alien adults.

Also during Fiscal Year 2019, Rio Grande Valley Sector agents seized 122,769 pounds of marijuana and 2,594 pounds of cocaine — both totals were the highest in the nation. Agents in this sector referred 26,801 cases to the Department of Justice — the second-highest total in the nation.

“Chief Hastings began his Border Patrol career in 1995 at the Cotulla station in the Laredo Sector,” Border Patrol officials said in a written statement. “Throughout his career, he held key leadership roles on both the southwest and northern borders to include CPA of the Buffalo Sector as well as multiple assignments at U.S. Border Patrol Headquarters.”

Chief Hastings added, “I am committed to doing everything I can to strengthen the already incredible partnerships that my predecessors, current leaders, and agents have formed in the Rio Grande Valley.”

Donald Trump says China will defeat the deadly coronavirus, thanks to its great discipline and Xi Jinping’s strong leadership, as the US president’s tone on Beijing softens following the recent signing of a new trade deal.

The two leaders discussed the outbreak of the virus, which has claimed 640 lives in China, during a phone call on Friday.

That provided the perfect grounds for an attack on Beijing, but Trump, who earlier blasted China for currency manipulation, intellectual property theft, and election meddling, was this time reluctant to take advantage of the dire health crisis in order to attack Beijing.

On the contrary the US president’s evaluation of the Chinese state and leader was a lot more positive; it follows the US-China trade war ending in January with the signing of what he called the “biggest deal there is.”

Xi is “strong, sharp and powerfully focused on leading the counterattack on the coronavirus,” Trump tweeted in the wake of the phone call. He praised China for “great discipline” and “building hospitals in a matter of only days.”

The US president also said that Washington was “working closely” with Beijing to help the country counter the disease.

Trump’s latest tweets again underline the discord inside his administration as his top officials maintain their harsh anti-Chinese stance despite the trade deal; one week ago US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo labeled the Chinese Communist Party, which is headed by Xi, “the central threat of our times.”

Pompeo’s statement was fully in line with the National Defense Strategy (NDA), which was unveiled by the US Department of Defense two years ago and described China as “predatory,” and a “strategic competitor,” which required “increased and sustained investment” to be kept in check.

China, in turn, consistently blasted Washington for its “Cold War mentality” and “hegemonic logic.” Beijing further accused the US of interfering in its internal affairs by sending ships and warplanes close to its waters in the Pacific, as well as supporting protests in Hong Kong. In late January, it also slammed the travel warning issued by the State Department over the coronavirus outbreak as “truly mean.”

Schools Closed as Five Brits Including 9-year-old Stricken with Coronavirus in France

France is closing two schools and trying to reassure vacationers in the Alps after five British citizens, including a 9-year-old child, contracted the new coronavirus from China at a French ski resort.

Saturday’s announcement of the five new cases in France at the height of the ski season is the latest example of how the tentacles of the virus can easily spread across multiple borders.

The five British citizens were staying in a chalet in the Alpine ski resort of Contamines-Montjoie near Mont Blanc, and were in close contact with another Briton who apparently contracted the virus in Singapore, traveled to the French Alps and then tested positive for the virus upon return to Britain, French Health Minister Agnes Buzyn told reporters Saturday.

That brings the total number of virus cases in France to 11. Britain has three confirmed cases. The new type of coronavirus has infected more than 34,800 people globally and killed more than 700, nearly all of them in China, since the first illnesses were detected in December.

The five British citizens with new cases of the virus are being held in Lyon-area hospitals, along with six other Britons who were in close contact with them and are now being monitored, the French health ministry said.

The chalet where they were staying housed a British family that lives in Contamines and another family of British vacationers. The sickened child lives in Contamines and attends a local school, and took French classes at another local school, regional officials told a news conference Saturday.

Both schools will be closed, and the pupils will be monitored for signs of the virus.

Amazon Only Paid 1.2% Taxes In 2019 Despite $13 Billion Profit

Amazon, whose CEO Jeff Bezos is the world’s richest person, is the world’s largest Internet company by revenue and the world’s largest internet marketplace. It has also avoided paying its fair share of taxes to the federal government by ruthlessly exploiting loopholes in the tax code. Amazon had a market cap of $1.02 trillion as of Wednesday.

In 2018, Amazon reported income of more than $11 billion, but paid $0 in federal taxes. Thanks to tax credits and deductions, Amazon actually received a federal tax refund of $129 million. In 2017, Amazon received a $137 million refund from the federal government.

The year 2019 looks to be different — on paper. Amazon patted itself on the back for announcing it allegedly paid “billions” in taxes. In reality, it only paid $162 million in federal income tax. This amounts to an effective tax rate of 1.2 percent on over $13 billion in profits.

Amazon’s claim to have paid “billions” in taxes in 2019 is an outright falsehood, say financial analysts. In an announcement, Amazon claims to have paid more than $1 billion in “federal income tax expense,” “more than $2.4 billion in other federal taxes, including payroll taxes and customs duties,” and “more than $1.6 billion in state and local taxes, including payroll taxes, property taxes, state income taxes, and gross receipts taxes.” It also said it collected and sent close to “$9 billion in sales and use taxes to states and localities throughout the U.S.”

Yahoo Finance, however, pointed that with the exception of the federal income tax, the listed amounts aren’t actually taxes Amazon paid to the federal government. There’s “no meaningful” connection between Amazon and many of the taxes it listed in its announcement, said Matthew Gardner, senior fellow for the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) that analyzes corporations and their tax avoidance.

Israel uses civilian flight as shield to raid Damascus after Syrian troops liberate Saraqib

An Israeli airstrike, carried out as Syria troops were liberating the terrorist-held town of Saraqib in northwestern Idlib province, has endangered a civilian flight carrying 172 passengers, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said Friday the civil Airbus-320 was heading to Damascus from the Iranian capital early Thursday when it was forced to divert its route as the Syrian capital's air defenses were intercepting Israeli missiles.

The plane made an emergency landing in the Hmeymim air base in Syria's western coastal province of Latakia.

“Only due to timely actions of the Damascus airport dispatchers and the efficient operation of the automated air traffic control system, the Airbus-320 managed to… successfully land at the closest alternative airfield,” Konashenkov said.

'Israel using passenger jets as shields'

The spokesman stressed that Israel was well aware of civilian flights around Damascus and that such missions demonstrated the regime's reckless disregard for human lives.

"The Israeli general staff's use of passenger jets as a cover for its military operations or as a shield from Syrian missile system fire is becoming a typical trait of Israeli air force," he said.

Russia had previously warned that Israeli airstrikes against Damascus were endangering civilian jets.

Lebanese officials have also stated that Israeli jets illegally conducting operations against Syria from the country's airspace pose a danger to civilian aircraft in Lebanon.

In 2018, Syrian air defenses mistakenly shot down a Russian Ilyushin Il-20 reconnaissance plane after it was similarly used as a cover by Israeli warplanes, killing 15 people on board.

Syria: Saraqib fully liberated

The Israeli airstrikes took place as Syrian troops were entering the terrorist-controlled town of Saraqib, which lies at the crossroads of two key highways in the Idlib province, the last major terrorist bastion in Syria.

The town has currently been fully liberated by Syrian forces.

Damascus has highlighted that the Israeli airstrike on Thursday happened at the same time the Turkish military was deploying a military caravan in Idlib to "protect the terrorists" and halt the Syrian military advance in the province.

Damascus has slammed the operation as evidence of Tel Aviv and Ankara's coordinated support for the terrorists.

Israel is known for conducting airstrikes against Damascus during major Syrian military advancements.

The reported joint Israeli-Turkish operations in Syria come as Ankara - which has also been a major backer for terrorists in Syria - has warned that it may resort to military action if Syria does not withdraw its troops battling terrorist forces in Idlib until the end of February.

“My role in this is to represent him in a criminal case, and as I’ve said multiple times, there’s a difference between sins and crimes. You can believe that Harvey Weinstein is a sinner, and you can believe that he did things that you wouldn’t do or you wouldn’t like, but my question here is does that rise to the level of a crime,” Rotunno told Megan Twohey, the Times reporter who co-wrote the 2017 Weinstein investigation.

“I think quite often, we look to the accusers and we talk about the effects that these things have on their lives, but we do not look at the effects that these types of allegations and accusations have on the person being accused,” said Rotunno.

Rotunno remains particularly concerned with the long-term effects that sexual misconduct accusations have on men, invoking an observation her mother made about the media’s rush to condemn three Duke University lacrosse team players for a gang-rape allegation: “When those boys die someday, their obituary is going to say the Duke Lacrosse players.”

To clients who once felt hopeless, Rotunno’s legal acumen has made a world of difference. Pakistan Swiftly Passes Resolution Calling for Public Hanging of Pedophiles

Pakistan’s parliament passed a resolution Friday that calls for the public hanging of convicted child killers and rapists.

AFP reports that the resolution, which is non-binding, comes after a number of high-profile child sex-abuse cases have scandalized the South Asian nation in recent years, leading to major outbreaks of unrest and riots.

Parliamentary affairs minister Ali Muhammad Khan, who presented the resolution in the lower house of the legislature, said that child killers and rapists “should not only be given the death penalty by hanging, but they should be hanged publicly.”

“The Quran commands us that a murderer should be hanged,” the minister added.

While the resolution was swiftly passed by a majority of lawmakers, human rights minister Shireen Mazari has emphatically stated that it does not enjoy the backing of the government.

In a tweet, Mazari wrote:

“The resolution passed in [the National Assembly] today on public hangings was across party lines and not a govt-sponsored resolution but an individual act. Many of us oppose it – our [Ministry of Human Rights] strongly opposes this. Unfortunately I was in a mtg and wasn’t able to go to NA.”

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry also condemned the passage of the resolution.

Chaudhry tweeted:

“Strongly condemn this resolution. This is just another grave act in line with brutal civilisation practices [sic]. Societies [should] act in a balanced way, [barbarity] is not an answer to crimes. This is another expression of extremism.”

However, Pakistan has struggled to come to grips with rampant crimes of child sexual abuse.

A child rapist was hanged in October 2018 after his crime in Kasur, near Lahore, sparked days of nationwide protests and unrest.

Six-year-old victim Zainab Fatima Ameen was attacked by a 24-year-old man who later confessed to raping and murdering the young girl.

In 2015, authorities busted a huge paedophilia ring in Kasur. In the massive scandal, it was found that at least 280 children were being sexually abused by a gang who blackmailed parents with threats to publicly release the videos.

In March 2016, Pakistan criminalized sexual assault against minors, child pornography and trafficking. Only acts of rape and sodomy had previously been punishable by law.

Human rights NGO Amnesty International also condemned the recent passage of the bill by the lower house of parliament, with AI Deputy South Asia Director Omar Waraich noting that “public hangings are acts of unconscionable cruelty” with no place in a society that respects people’s rights.

Trial begins for archaeologist accused of forging earliest portrayal of Jesus’ crucifixion

A criminal trial has begun of an archaeologist accused of forging a trove of Roman artifacts that allegedly show a third-century depiction of Jesus’ crucifixion, Egyptian hieroglyphics and the early use of the Basque language.

Archaeologist Eliseo Gil and two former colleagues appeared this week in a criminal court in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of Spain’s Basque Country, The Telegraph reported. They are accused of creating forgeries of ancient graffiti on hundreds of pieces of pottery, glass and brick that they claim were found in the Roman ruins at Iruña-Veleia, about 6 miles (10 kilometers) west of Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Gil claimed the graffiti on the artifacts showed very early links between the Roman settlement in Spain and the Basque language; he also claimed that a drawing of three crosses scratched on a piece of ancient pottery was the earliest known portrayal of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

But other archaeologists have disputed the finds. Among other major discrepancies, they pointed out that some of the language of the graffiti shows that it was made in modern times.

Gil and his former colleagues, geologist Óscar Escribano and materials analyst Rubén Cerdán, say they are not guilty of any deception.

Gil and Escribano are facing five and a half years in prison if they are found guilty of fraud and damaging heritage items, while Cerdán faces two and a half years in prison if he is found guilty of making fraudulent documents vouching for the authenticity of the artifacts.

According to The Daily Wire, the 72-year-old actor ran into a spot of trouble with Twitter’s policy enforcement officials last spring, posting rather cryptically with regard to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into President Donald Trump, “‘If you try to kill the King, you better not miss.’ #HangThemAll.”

The quote was paraphrased from American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson’s classic line, “When you strike at a king, you must kill him” — an allusion to the potential consequences and backlash faced throughout history by those who seek to unseat those in power.

That did not, however, stop the social media giant from labeling the tweet as threatening, and indefinitely suspending Woods’ account for an alleged violation of site policy regarding “abusive behavior.”

Former Air Force Drone Operator Speaks Out Against US Atrocities

A former Air Force drone operator-turned-whistleblower is once again speaking out against the atrocities he committed while serving in a military he describes as "worse than the Nazis."

Brandon Bryant was a sensor operator of USAF unmanned aerial drones from 2006 to 2011. His job was targeted killing – remotely firing missiles at targets 7,000 miles (11,000 km) away from an air-conditioned command center near Las Vegas, Nevada. During his Air Force tenure, Bryant says his squadron engaged 1,626 targets, including women and children. He estimates that he is personally responsible for the deaths of 13 people.

Bryant told Britain’s Independent that he reached his breaking point after accidentally killing a child in Afghanistan. He had just fired a Hellfire missile at a building containing an enemy target when he saw a child leave the building. Bryant reported the incident to his superiors. "It was a fucking dog," he was told. "Drop it." But he couldn’t drop it. "When the missile struck, I knew in my soul I had become a murderer," he said.

Earlier, after his first kill, other airmen in his squadron congratulated Bryant on "popping his cherry." He told Roots Action Network in 2017 that drone operators were told their job was "killing people and breaking things." This "went against everything that I had ever learned about honor and justice and training," he said. Bryant said his superiors punished and mocked him to keep him in line. He called the US military "worse than the Nazis" because "we should know better."

After the strike that killed the Afghan child, Bryant decided to quit the military and start speaking out against drone warfare. Becoming a whistleblower has had dire consequences. Bryant says he has lost family and friends, and that he and his family have been threatened. However, he is driven by a desire to educate Americans about the dehumanizing effect of drones on both their operators and their victims. "I would want people to know, beyond its existence, the consequences it has on us as a species to delineate our power into something so easily destructive," he said. "Every time we get closer to that edge, we’re going to have to realize where it places us."
