Man with knife & plan to 'assassinate' Trump detained outside White House

A man carrying a knife has been detained outside the White House in Washington, DC. He told the US Secret Service that he'd brought the weapon to “assassinate” Donald Trump.

The suspect himself approached a security officer who was patrolling outside the presidential residence Saturday afternoon, and told him of his plan. “I have a knife to do it with,” he said, according to a police report seen by AP.

Police identified the mas as 25-year-old Roger Hedgpeth, who was arrested on charges of making threats to cause bodily harm. The man had a 3.5-inch (around 9-cm) knife on him as well as an empty pistol holster.

After the arrest, Hedgpeth was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. It turned out that he was a “critically missing/endangered person as well as a mental health consumer” from Brandon, Florida. It’s currently unclear how long he was missing and how was he able to cover the 1,500 km separating Brandon and Washington, DC.

According to his schedule, President Trump was likely inside the White House at the moment of the incident. However, he had no appearances outside the residence planned during the day.

The family of road traffic victim Harry Dunn has called for a full public enquiry after a report that the US woman who fled the UK after hitting the teen with her car is a high-ranking CIA spy.

The Mail on Sunday reported that multiple sources, both in London and Washington, said that fugitive Anne Sacoolas had a CIA background. Her husband is also believed to be an intelligence officer and the new report suggests she even might be of a higher rank than he.

Harry's mother, Charlotte Charles, told the PA news agency that she and the whole family were "full of anger" after hearing the news reports. "How could they do this to us?" she wondered.

The woman confessed that she was returned to the same state she'd found herself in after the death of her son in August, when the British authorities "were trying to kick this all under the carpet."

She reportedly already sent a letter to the UK Foreign Office, demanding to be told if the agency was aware about Sacoolas's involvement with the CIA.

The Foreign Office said that "Anne Sacoolas was notified to us as a spouse with no official role."

Sky News also reported she had a CIA background, citing their sources.

The adviser and spokesman for the family of Harry Dunn, Radd Seiger, has called for "a full public enquiry into who knew what and when in Government" and the "deplorable manner" the relatives of the deceased teen were treated.

Its rapid construction reportedly started on 3 February with equipment and materials arriving from Iraq via the al-Waleed border crossing.

The news agency's sources claim that the base has been erected in order to prevent Russian forces, deployed in the Arab Republic at the behest of the government, from reaching the Rmelan oil field. The agency also claims that American troops have blocked several alleged Russian military attempts to reach the oil field.

It’s taken a long time for the U.S. Navy’s newest carrier to get to the windswept Atlantic, some 100 miles off the Virginia capes.

The $13 billion Gerald R. Ford, the most high-tech aircraft carrier ever built, has had a long and well-documented list of problems — and many that still need fixing. Ford’s troubles have drawn fire from Congress, watchdogs, and even President Trump, who lamented the Navy’s decision to equip the ship with unproven electromagnetic catapults instead of the “goddamned steam” mechanisms that have flung naval warplanes aloft for six decades.

But after years of delays and billions in cost overruns, the Ford is finally beginning 18 months of rigorous tests, about half to be spent at sea. Along the way, its sailors will learn to use the new technology, like those new electromagnetic catapults.

“We’re seeing the ship come to life,” Cmdr. Mehdi “Metro” Akacem, who oversees flight operations, said Monday.

“Really, over the last couple of weeks as we’ve gotten out here [to sea], we’ve got the salt air over the flight deck, got some skidmarks on the [runway],” said Akacem, who goes by the title of Air Boss. “It’s really starting to feel like an aircraft carrier. The intangible of that is really valuable.”

Pompeo Warns US Governors About Chinese Influence

At a meeting of governors of U.S. states and territories, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned about China’s influence seeping into local politics.

“It’s [China] assessed our vulnerabilities, and it’s decided to exploit our freedoms to gain advantage over us at the federal level, the state level, and the local level,” Pompeo said during a Feb. 8 speech at the National Governors Association meeting held in Washington.

“Competition with China is not just a federal issue,” Pompeo said. “It’s happening in your states, with consequences for our foreign policy.”

Among several examples he gave of such efforts by Beijing, China’s Consul General in New York City sent a letter last month to the speaker of the legislature in an unnamed state. Quoting from the letter, Pompeo said the Chinese diplomat urged U.S. officials to “avoid engaging in any official contact with Taiwan,” such as “sending congratulatory messages to the electeds” or “inviting officials in Taiwan to visit the United States.”
