According to former US Attorney Joe Digenova, the White House has identified the “anonymous” author who penned the anti-Trump NY Times ‘resistance hit piece and ‘tell all’ book.

Digenova said the anonymous resister will ‘depart the White House’ this week as President Trump continues to clean house and drain the swamp.

The author of the NY Times ‘resistance’ op-ed also penned an anti-Trump tell all book titled, “A Warning.”

“An unprecedented behind-the-scenes portrait of the Trump presidency from the anonymous senior official whose first words of warning about the president rocked the nation’s capital,” the description of the book states.

The book became available for purchase in November and the DOJ got to work identifying the author.

Update (1400ET): Yet more comments from President Xi's excursion out into the neighborhoods of Beijing, where the coronavirus is menacing the city's population. During his outing, Xi warned China was prepared for a long and "grim" battle with the virus - and that it would ultimately prevail, no matter what.

According to SCMP, Chinese state media reported that Xi made the comment during a visit to a "district-level disease control office."

"The outbreak of the coronavirus is a major test of the national disease control and prevention centres of all levels in the country," state television quoted him as saying. "It has shown both the strengths and many shortcomings of the system."

Xi has alternatively praised the Communist cadres for their hard work combating the crisis while excoriating and scapegoating local officials accused of reacting too slowly to contain the virus (a policy that was almost definitely handed down by Beijing).

He has also insisted that the Chinese people must remain confident in the economy, which Xi insisted would bounce back from the outbreak once it's contained.

"[We] must remain firmly confident about the fundamentally positive outlook of China’s economy in the long term," he told officials. "The impact is only in the short term, and we should not be scared by it."

Meanwhile, President Trump told the White House press pool that he expects the virus to go away in April because of "the heat." Unfortunately, scientists have walked back their claims about a swift end the outbreak, warning instead that it could drag on for months, if not years.

Conservatives Weigh In On Sen. Hawley’s Newest Idea To Help Regulators Reign In Silicon Valley

Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri is proposing a complete overhaul of the Federal Trade Commission, arguing that the agency is not capable of regulating big tech issues.

Some conservatives say the idea has merit so long as it helps prevent Silicon Valley companies from censoring conservatives, while others say the proposal goes too far.

Hawley’s idea comes as he continues to push a robust effort to amend a more than 20-year-old law protecting internet companies from being sued for content posted on their platforms.

Conservatives are considering what to make of Sen. Josh Hawley’s long-shot proposal Monday to completely overhaul the regulatory agency responsible for policing privacy and antitrust issues.

The Missouri Republican is angling to deconstruct the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and fold it into the Department of Justice, according to a proposal Hawley’s published Monday. Hawley and other conservatives believe the 100-year-old agency is not equipped to regulate today’s big tech firms.

“The FTC isn’t working. It wastes time in turf wars with the DOJ, nobody is accountable for decisions, and it lacks the ‘teeth’ to get after Big Tech’s rampant abuses,” Hawley said in a press statement addressing the new proposal.

“Congress needs to do something about it,” he added.

The FTC’s jurisdiction is divided, making it difficult for the agency to properly regulate industries, Hawley’s proposal notes.

“It [FTC] wastes time in turf wars with the Department of Justice (DOJ) while failing to confront the increasing concentration in our economy, in the tech sector most obviously. And it is woefully unaccountable,” the proposal notes.

Hawley’s move comes as he tries to amend a law protecting tech companies from being sued for content users post on their platforms.

Hawley introduced the Ending Support for Internet Censorship Act in June 2019, which seeks to amend Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a law passed in 1996 when the internet was young and growing. Congress was concerned at the time that subjecting internet companies to the same civil liability as all other businesses would stymie growth.

Rabbi, Convicted of Sex Crimes, Believed to Have ‘Superhuman’ Gift, is Arrested on Fraud Allegations

In 2016, Jerusalem-based Rabbi Eliezer Berland, who headed a Hasidic sect, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for two counts of indecent acts and assault. The conviction did not rob him of support as even after he was released on parole after serving less than a year in prison, he remained some kind of “superhuman” for some followers.

Rabbi/sex offender Eliezer Berland has been arrested in Jerusalem on allegations of fraud, tax evasion and exploitation-related offences, along with five other suspects, Haaretz reports. His wife was also reportedly detained. The suspects are to appear in front of the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court which is to decide on their detention. More arrests are said to follow.

The Israel police state that they are suspected of “cynically and cruelly exploiting hundreds of people and their family members, who probably were in their darkest hour, while demanding them to pay the rabbi tens of thousands of shekels in exchange for his blessings”, while the rabbi allegedly gave followers candy instead of medications.

Police report that they’ve exposed “infrastructure for carrying out a variety of money laundering offences, tax evasion and other tax-related offences worth hundreds of millions of shekels”.

Abusing Position for Money

There are said to be complaints against Berland from hundreds of people in addition to numerous testimonies. For example, some of his supporters were reportedly forced to borrow money to pay him. He also allegedly exploited some of his followers’ beliefs and promised that terminally ill patients would not die. Even after they passed away, he is thought to have milked their families for money in exchange for their resurrection, and when this did not happen, he demanded more, promising to ensure they are to rise first amid the resurrection of the dead.

Additionally, as Channel 13 News reported last year, the rabbi demanded considerable sums of money from a cancer patient and forbade her from obtaining medical treatment, letting her turn to doctors only several months later after her situation had deteriorated. The woman eventually died. As journalists reported, her story was by no means unique.

Followers Attack Police

Sunday’s arrest, however, does not seem to have shattered his followers’ faith in Berland, as they reportedly confronted the police who came to arrest him as he was teaching in a synagogue in Jerusalem. Some reportedly threw stones and other things at officers and wounded two of them. The police were forced to use stun grenades in response. Additionally, the rabbi’s supporters tried to stop the police car that took him away, by lying on the road or chasing the vehicle.

As Haaretz’s earlier reports suggested, Berland, who led the Shuvu Banim Hasidic community, is hailed by his most devoted supporters as God incarnate, endowed with “superhuman powers.” Their support has not been shaken by the criminal case against him, as he was convicted of two counts of sexual acts against women without consent and assault after several years on the run and extradition from South Africa.The original indictment accused him of abusing his position of trust within the community and committing offences against minors. However, a later indictment, drafted after his confession, dropped molestation charges as part of his plea bargain. After signing the plea deal, he was sentenced to 18 months behind bars in 2016. He was released less than a year later, however, on parole.

US Grand Jury Reportedly Probing Jehovah’s Witnesses Over Alleged Child Sex Abuse Cover-Ups

A former Jehovah’s Witness claims a Pennsylvania grand jury is investigating the Christian denomination’s leadership over allegations of failing to carry members’ reports of child sex abuse to the authorities in recent decades.

Mark O’Donnell, a 52-year-old former Jehovah’s Witness who left the religion after 30 years, revealed to USA Today last week that the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office has launched an investigation regarding the governing Watchtower Bible and Tract Society’s alleged cover-up of child sex crimes within the denomination.

While Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s office expressed that they “cannot confirm nor deny” the investigation’s existence, O’Donnell provided USA Today with a copy of the grand jury subpoena, which is dated June 11, 2019.

According to O’Donnell’s February 8 article on JWSurvey, a website which publishes content critiquing the religion’s inner workings, he first testified in front of 23 grand jurors on August 22, 2019, for over two hours regarding subjects ranging from his personal history with Jehovah’s Witnesses to the governing body and its network’s protocol for handling sex abuse allegations.

“They made it clear that they wanted to go to the top of the organization,” the 52-year-old told Reveal News. “That even if an organization is headquartered in another state or country, they were not going to let it be a barrier to their investigation.”

O’Donnell returned to the state capitol on December 18, 2019, and was read a six-page, once-confidential letter issued by Watchtower to “all bodies of elders in the United States” in 1989. The document plainly stated that that elders have a responsibility to “shepherd the flock” and “must be careful not to divulge information about personal matters to unauthorized persons” - including law enforcement officials - and instead contact the religion’s legal department.

The former Jehovah’s Witness also revealed that another Watchtower-issued document from March 14, 1997, was also presented before the Pennsylvania Grand Jury. This particular document requested information on known abusers within the religion.

“The body of elders should … give the Society a report on anyone who is currently serving or who formerly served in a Society-appointed position in your congregation who is known to have been guilty of child molestation in the past,” reads the letter, which had been previously brought up in civil lawsuits against Watchtower as proof of the religion possessing a database with information on thousands of abusers.

"Any suggestion that Jehovah’s Witnesses foster or enable abuse is false," the Jehovah's Witnesses’ US Branch said in a statement to USA Today, asserting members “care deeply about children” and adheres to the law.

"We welcome an opportunity to explain our beliefs and practices to government officials and look forward to any recommendations they may have as we continue to focus on educating and equipping parents to protect their children from the horrible crime of abuse,” added the denomination’s leadership

The Pennsylvania state prosecutor’s office previously conducted an investigation into six Roman Catholic archdioceses in 2018, leading to the release of the names of dozens of clergy members and seminarians who were accused of sexually abusing children over the past several decades.

While the office cannot comment on the matter at the moment, it is possible that warrants and additional subpoenas may result from the reported grand jury investigation in the coming months.

Russia's Hmeimim Air Base in Syria Repels Militant Drone Attacks - Defence Ministry

Russian military forces at Hmeimim air base in Syria have repelled two drone attacks carried out by militants, the head of the Russian Defence Ministry's reconciliation center, Maj. Gen. Yuri Borenkov, said on Monday.

"On the evening of 9 February, when it became dark, the air defence of the Russian air base Hmeimim detected and repelled two attacks that used combat unmanned aerial vehicles launched from the area of the Idlib de-escalation zone controlled by the militants," Borenkov said.

According to Borenkov, the first drone came from northeast and was repelled at about two kilometers, or 1.2 miles, from the base by the Pantsir-S missile system. The second drone came from the northwest and was shot down at some 3.7 miles from the base.

There were no casualties or material damage, and the base continues to work as usual, Borenkov said.

This is not for the first time the Russian base has been targeted in a drone attack. Earlier in the month, Russian air defences repelled another attack, destroying what was described as "a small-sized aerial target (UAV) of unknown origin" on a distant approach to the base. The base and personnel sustained no damage, according to a Russian Defence Ministry statement.

Syria has been significantly crippled by an eight-year war between pro-government troops, militants from various groups that oppose the administration of Syrian President Bashar Assad, and terrorist groups such as the Nusra Front and Daesh. The latter has lost ground in recent years due to massive operations carried out by the Syrian government.

The conflict in the country has produced an estimated 12-13 million refugees, with over 6 million internally displaced. Of the Syrians affected in the one of the worst humanitarian crises on the planet - according to the United Nations - nearly half are children and require immediate and ongoing humanitarian assistance.

Russia, along with Turkey and Iran, are the guarantors of the ceasefire in war-torn Syria. Russia carries out ongoing and regular humanitarian operations across the country while assisting Damascus in providing safe passage for the return of the nation's refugees.
