40 more on cruise ship in Yokohama test positive for coronavirus
TOKYO (Kyodo) – The number of people infected with coronvirus in Japan has topped 200 after another 40 people including a quarantine officer on a cruise ship docked at Yokohama have tested positive, the health ministry said Wednesday.
Four men already disembarked from the quarantined Diamond Princess and taken to hospital – three Japanese and one foreign national in their 60s and 70s – are in a severe condition, with two of the four being treated in intensive care, the ministry said.
The total number of confirmed infections on the ship, which has been placed in quarantine since a man who disembarked in Hong Kong was found infected with the virus, has risen to 174.
The quarantine officer was taking the temperatures of passengers and collecting medical questionnaires from them between Feb. 3 and 4, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
The officer, who was not wearing protective wear or goggles but was using a mask and gloves, disinfected after seeing each passenger, according to the health ministry.
Japan is battling to contain the spread of the virus that apparently originated in China's Wuhan, the provincial capital of Hubei Province, blocking entry to foreigners from the region. It has also turned away another cruise ship that had been headed for Japan.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Japan will extend its entry ban to foreign visitors from Zhejiang Province in eastern China, effective Thursday. Holders of Chinese passports issued by the province will be also barred from entry.
"It's imperative for us to take steps in a comprehensive and flexible manner to keep the virus away from our shores," Abe said at a meeting of a government task force at the prime minister's office.
From now, the government will bypass Cabinet approval when it wants to expand the scope of the entry ban to foreign arrivals from other regions in China where coronavirus infections are rampant, or to cruise ships carrying people suspected to have been infected, according to Abe.
