>If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks…will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered…. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs. – Thomas Jefferson in the debate over the Re-charter of the Bank Bill (1809)

Damnit.

No, no, no, no, no….this is a fake quote. Been circulating for years. The dead giveaway is "inflation, then by deflation." This is 20th century terminology that was definitely NOT in usage during Jefferson's time.

Try as you may, you will NEVER source the quote, because he never said it.

The other ones, yes. And I agree with his sentiments and your point in posting them, but feel obligated to smash this fabrication whenever I come across it. Just a personal issue with me.

>I've read all the "Fors and Againsts" and the complaints about it not appearing until over a hundred years after he died…and I ignored them

Which is even worse.

Spreading fake quotes in defense of a position is careless and undermines others fighting for what you profess. It's EXACTLY what shills do, taking a good position and then peppering it with misleading or false trails and info, enabling the other side to hold it up as evidence of ignorance or ulterior motive.
