Recent history shows that physical money can be exchanged fairly easily, look at countries such as Spain - peseta to euro. Granted change to another physical form. Some people still holding on to pesetas, lack of trust.

The psychological backlash shouldn't be underestimated.

An unrelated example but perhaps illustrative is smoking culture (USA). Up until the late 70's it was still common, smoking on planes, theaters, other public places. Now, quite ostracized. Public opinion can be swayed and persuaded through persuasion, propaganda, programming. Or people can learn for themselves, which may have a more profound and longer lasting effect on society.
