NFL Team’s Deep Catholic Ties

Behind Role in Abuse Crisis

It’s a controversy that has led fans in New Orleans and beyond to question what exactly the Saints did for the church and whether it was appropriate

"Why would an NFL team, even one called the Saints, strike a behind-the-scenes alliance with the Roman Catholic Church on an issue as emotionally fraught as clergy sex abuse?

It’s a question even die-hard Saints fans in this heavily Catholic city are asking, and the answer appears to lie in the powerful bond that the team's devoutly Catholic owner, Tom Benson, and his now-widow Gayle built for years with church leaders.

An Associated Press review of public tax documents found that the Bensons' foundation has given at least $62 million to the Archdiocese of New Orleans and other Catholic causes over the past dozen years, including gifts to schools, universities, charities and individual parishes.

Along the way, Archbishop Gregory Aymond, who knew the couple separately before they married in 2004, has become almost a part of the team, thought by some to bring the beloved Saints help from a higher power."

NFL’s Saints Fight to Shield Emails in Catholic Abuse Crisis

Saints attorneys, in court papers, disputed any suggestion that the team helped the church cover up crimes

By Jim Mustian • Published on January 24, 2020 at 5:59 pm

"NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints are going to court to keep the public from seeing hundreds of emails that allegedly show team executives doing public relations damage control for the area's Roman Catholic archdiocese to help it contain the fallout from a burgeoning sexual abuse crisis.

Attorneys for about two dozen men suing the church say in court filings that the 276 documents they obtained through discovery show that the NFL team, whose owner is devoutly Catholic, aided the Archdiocese of New Orleans in its “pattern and practice of concealing its crimes.”

“Obviously, the Saints should not be in the business of assisting the Archdiocese, and the Saints' public relations team is not in the business of managing the public relations of criminals engaged in pedophilia," the attorneys wrote in a court filing. "The Saints realize that if the documents at issue are made public, this professional sports organization also will be smearing itself.""

Bishop prohibits priest from broadcasting opinion after criticizing sex abuse scandals

by Laura Taylor & Caroline Eaker Wednesday,

February 12th 2020

"MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WSET) – A local Catholic priest broke his silence on the way the church handled one of the biggest controversies.

The Catholic Diocese of Richmond has released the names of more than two dozen priests that are facing 'credible and substantiated' allegations of sexual abuse against a minor in February of 2019.

The priest at St. Joseph's Catholic Church is refusing to stay silent despite the threat of losing his priesthood.

Father Mark White's blog lead Bishop Barry Knestout to order White's silence.

"He said that he thought what I had written was disrespectful and not appropriate so he ordered me to remove everything that I had on the internet and to be silent on the internet from now on under pain of being removed as the pastor if I do not obey," said White.

White voiced his frustration and disgust about how the church responded to the many sexual abuse scandals, particularly the cases involving former Cardinal Theodore Edgar McCarrick.

“I was hoping that as a church we could live in our truth and believe in our Lord Jesus Christ that he came to allow us to live in our truth and find our way by doing that and of course what we are all about it believing in something and we need to be a church that people can believe in," said White."

New lawsuits filed against catholic priests over sex abuse claims

By Nicole Garcia

Published 23 hours ago

"PHOENIX - Two new lawsuits have been filed against Catholic priests who are accused of abuse decades ago.

One of the suspects, identified as 71-year-old Joseph Henn, is at the 4th Avenue Jail, accused of abuse that happened between 1979 and 1981.

Back in 2003, Henn was indicted on 14 counts and then fled to Italy. He was brought back to Phoenix in 2019, and more victims came forward.

Now, a Grand Jury has indicted Henn, again, on 18 more counts of child sex abuse. The victims say they were all students at Phoenix's St. Mark's Catholic School.

"Bishop [Thomas] O'Brien transferred pedophile priests throughout the diocese," said attorney Robert Pastor. "Parish to parish. School to school."

Pastor represents Mike Borst, who filed his lawsuit in 2016, naming Dennis Pecore as his abuser. Pecore is a convicted child predator who spent several years in a Wisconsin prison.

Pastor claims the diocese used St. Marks as a dumping ground to sweep pedophile priests under the rug.

"We deposed Bishop [Thomas] Olmstead, and we asked him 'have you identified who those pedophile priests are?'" said Pastor. "His answer was 'no.'""

Former Catholic “fixer” explains why accused priests come to Missouri

POSTED 11:03 PM, FEBRUARY 11, 2020, BY CHRIS HAYES, UPDATED AT 05:21PM

FEBRUARY 11, 2020

"ST. LOUIS – Patrick Wall describes himself as a former fixer for the Catholic Church. The former monk says his job was to clean up after a report of sexual abuse.

“Every one of my assignments was to follow a monk who had been credibly accused of child sexual assault and they had to remove him because the knowledge became public,” he said.

Wall spoke with Fox 2 via Skype about why he left the church after years of fixing allegations.

“It really wasn’t until years later that I began to have an understanding of what my assignments were. They were just one following another and I would say until 1996 or ’97, I didn’t understand essentially what I was assigned to do time after time after time,” he said. “That’s when awareness came that this huge dilemma and disaster of childhood sexual assault by priests was not going to end and that’s when I made the personal decision, I couldn’t support it any longer.”"

‘Evil’ former monk at Catholic boarding school jailed for abusing boys

By Press Association 2020

"A former monk at a Catholic boarding school who continued to abuse young boys after confessing to having sexual contact with a pupil has been jailed for more than 20 years.

Peter Turner, 80, sexually abused two boys after he was forced to leave Ampleforth College, in North Yorkshire, and sent away to work in a parish in Workington, Cumbria.

He was sentenced to 20 years and 10 months at York Crown Court on Wednesday after admitting to a string of sexual offences committed more than 30 years ago against three boys aged between nine and 12.

Turner, who was previously known as Father Gregory Carroll, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to 11 counts of indecent assault, two counts of buggery and one count of gross indecency with a child.

He served a previous jail sentence in 2005 after he admitted offences against 10 pupils at Ampleforth between 1979 and 1987.

Judge Sean Morris, the Recorder of York, said: “You have brought evil into this world when, by your calling, you should have brought hope, help and succour.”

The judge said: “You were a priest at Ampleforth boarding school.

“It’s a religious school and, no doubt, because of that, that’s a comfort to parents because they will be thinking that they are entrusting the care of their child to men of God, instead, in your case it was to a man of evil.”"
