What non-standard definition of 'evergreen' seems to be most likely here?

The intersection between 'evergreen' and 'depopulation' that comes to mind is that They would survive a "winter" event safely in bunkers while a percentage of the rest of the "forest" dies off. But this invokes that standard definition involving trees, not a non-standard definition.
