Two weeks after a cheating scandal cost 30 state troopers their jobs, the agency’s longtime director learned he was losing his.
Public Safety Commissioner Mark McDonough announced his decision to retire, effective March 1, at the department’s monthly meeting. He said he was informed by Gov. Brian Kemp that he was seeking new leadership.
McDonough said the decision didn’t come as a surprise. “This is a job that comes with a phone call and leaves with a phone,” he said. McDonough said he was not given a reason for dismissal but suspects the cheating scandal played a part.“The person at the head is ultimately responsible,” he said.McDonough was appointed to the post in 2011 by former Gov. Nathan Deal.
