Trimage is another open source tool I use every day to remove unnecessary embedded color profiles from PNG+JPG, and compress PNG files that have uncompressed repeated pixels or limited colorspace. Depending on the graphic sometimes it can shrink the file 50%, sometimes just a few percent or not at all.

Am well familiar with Gimp and Linux toolset

Not so much with other platforms
