Grand jury indicts 3 top administrators of Philippine church in scheme to traffic workers and defraud immigration system

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A federal grand jury has charged three top administrators of a Philippines-based church with overseeing a labor trafficking scheme that forced church members to solicit donations for a bogus charity after the defendants illegally obtained visas and other immigration documents that allowed the workers to enter and remain in the United States.

The one-count indictment returned by the grand jury late Wednesday alleges a conspiracy to commit a series of offenses –including trafficking with respect to forced labor, document servitude, immigration fraud and marriage fraud.

The three defendants were arrested last month after being named in a criminal complaint that alleged a conspiracy to commit immigration fraud. Today’s indictment expands the scope of the alleged scheme and includes new details about the immigration fraud portion of the scheme.

The core allegations of the case are that representatives of the church – the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name (KOJC) – obtained visas for church members to enter the U.S. by claiming, for example, they would be performing at musical events. But once the church members arrived in the United States, they were required to surrender their passports and work long hours as “FTWs” (full-time workers), who solicited donations for a church non-profit called the Children’s Joy Foundation USA (CJF). While the workers raised funds by telling donors their money would benefit impoverished children in the Philippines, the indictment alleges that most or all of the money raised was used to finance KOJC operations and the lavish lifestyles of church leaders.

The ongoing investigation into KOJC is being conducted by the FBI, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service’s Fraud Detection and National Security Unit, the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, and IRS Criminal Investigation.

While some KOJC workers knew they were entering the U.S. to be fundraisers, the indictment alleges “other KOJC workers were unaware of the actual purpose until they were forced…to solicit on the streets nearly every day, year-round, working very long hours, and often sleeping in cars overnight, without normal access to over-the-counter medicine or even clothes.”

The defendants confiscated the victims’ passports and other immigration documents “to prevent and restrict…KOJC workers’ liberty to move and travel in order to maintain the labor and services of KOJC workers, some of whom were and had been a victim of a severe form of trafficking,” according to the indictment.

The three defendants charged in the indictment are:

Guia Cabactulan, 59, the lead KOJC administrator in the United States who maintained direct communication with KOJC leadership in the Philippines;

Marissa Duenas, 41, who allegedly secured the passports immediately after workers entered the U.S. and handled fraudulent immigration documents for KOJC workers; and

Amanda Estopare, 48, who allegedly was in charge of tracking and reporting the money raised in the U.S. to KOJC officials in the Philippines.

All three defendants – who were arrested on January 29 and remain in federal custody – are scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment February 20 in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

As part of the long-running scheme, the three defendants kept productive workers in the U.S. by obtaining student visas or by arranging sham marriages with KOJC workers who were U.S. citizens, the indictment alleges. To create the illusion of legitimate marriages, Duenas allegedly possessed ATM cards to show immigration officials that workers in the sham marriages had joint bank accounts. Furthermore, Cabactulan and Duenas possessed wedding rings for KOJC workers to use during their fraudulent marriage ceremonies. Immigration records summarized in the criminal complaint indicate there were 82 marriages involving KOJC administrators and FTWs over the past two decades.

When authorities searched the KOJC compound in Van Nuys on January 29, Cabactulan and Duenas possessed approximately 72 Filipino passports, seven United States passports, and one Ukrainian passport that belonged to other people, according to the indictment, which also notes that Duenas possessed four male wedding rings and three female wedding rings in an office at the KOJC compound.

The search also revealed that Duenas possessed a file titled “Traitor” that contained information on KOJC members who fled the church, the indictment alleges.

Turkey Claims Even More Syrian Soldiers Were Killed By Idlib Militants, As Well As By Israel

On February 14th, the Turkish Ministry of Defense advertised some more of the supposed successes of Turkish-backed militants in Idlib.

“According to the latest information received from various sources in Idlib region, 63 Assad regime elements have been neutralized”, the ministry said.

This is, yet again, only a rumor, since Turkey fails to present any evidence that actually any Syrian Arab Army troops had been killed.

So far, close to 300 hundred Syrian Arab Army have been allegedly killed by statements released by the Turkish Defense Ministry. There’s been no evidence provided, and there is no confirmation of such casualties on the side of Damascus.

On top of that, Anadolu Agency is also advertising what the Israeli air force is achieving against Damascus, and its Iranian allies.

Israeli bombing of the Syrian capital Damascus overnight on February 14th reportedly led to the killing of seven people, including four Iranian officers.

Citing a military source, Syrian state outlet SANA added that “at 23.45 p.m. [2145GMT] on Thursday, the army observed hostile missiles coming from over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, and immediately the army air defenses intercepted and downed a number of them before they reach their targets.”

“The hostile missiles came from over the occupied Syrian Golan,” it added, referring to the Israeli warplanes.

The Daily Sabah is also carrying out its own anti-Russia and anti-Damascus propaganda.

The Russian Embassy in Turkey, shared on Twitter a set of pictures showing the U.S. past engagement with the YPG/PKK group in Syria.

According to the Daily Sabah, this was allegedly an attempt by Russia to worsen relations between US and Turkey, since they’ve been improving after the US voiced its approval of Turkey’s endeavors in Idlib against the Syrian Arab Army.

“We leave you the verdict,” the tweet by the Russian Embassy in Ankara said. It contained two conflicting screenshots that showed the contradiction in the U.S. stance on the terrorist YPG, the Syrian wing of the PKK.

In one of the screenshots, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is seen with a caption saying “We support our NATO ally Turkey, whose soldiers have died after the attack” about the recent assaults by the Syrian Arab Army that killed 13 Turkish soldiers.

In the other screenshot, there was an infographic by Anadolu Agency (AA) which documented the Pentagon’s request for $200 million in support for YPG.

The Russian Embassy post also shows the hypocrisy of the US, as well as Turkey, who support terrorists, simply by denying they are such.

Turkey Threatens to Murder Another Russian Ambassador…’Fool me Once…’

Escalation in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib has triggered anti-Russian sentiment on Turkish social media, Russian Ambassador to Turkey, Aleksei Erkhov, said in an interview with Sputnik on Thursday, adding that he also has been threatened.

“By the way, all this [anti-Russian sentiments] happened once, five years ago, in media and on social networks, only it was in Aleppo instead of Idlib. How did it end? [With an] ‘Aircraft crisis’ and the outrageous murder of [Russian] Ambassador Andrey Karlov. I also have already been directly threatened,” Erkhov noted.

The ambassador pointed out that blog posts were full of the kind of anger and hatred that discourages people to think logically and understand their Russian partner’s actions, increasing the danger.

“There is absolute reluctance to understand the partner, logic of their actions, to listen to their words and take for granted their right to own a point of view, different from your vision, of what is happening. That kind of attitude can turn into big trouble,” the diplomat noted.

Situation in Idlib

Regarding the ongoing escalation in Idlib, Erkhov described a withdrawal of Syrian armed forces from the province as ‘unlikely’.

“The Syrian army is fighting on its own sovereign territory for the rights of its people, including the right to live the way their fathers and grandfathers used to live, and not by rules imposed by some bearded outlanders. So it has liberated dozens of villages from the illegal armed groups, as well as the strategic М5 highway, in recent days, and it is unlikely for someone to be capable of turning back the advancing army,” Erkhov said.

He also addressed the issue of the Turkish observation points.

“When we agreed in Sochi on their continued existence we meant that they would monitor the implementation of the ceasefire and the agreements, committed to the memorandum. But the agreements are not fulfilled, combat is still going on, and thus a question emerges: why do we conduct this so-called monitoring? What functions do these installations, which are essentially what is called ‘defended positions’ in the military parlance, perform?” the ambassador added.

Former RNC Chair Says Barr's Criticism of Trump Was 'Staged'

Sometimes an apple is just an apple. If people would just take that old adage to heart, there'd be a lot fewer idiotic conspiracy theories flying around.

But in the age of Trump, it's hard to resist the lure of conspiracy. We usually lead lives of quiet desperation and conspiracies are exciting. Knowledge of them puts us "on the inside," knowing how events are manipulated rather than helplessly being manipulated by those events.

So it's hard to resist formulating conspiracies when trying to explain Trump's inexplicable behavior. Had to be the Russians! The Ukrainians! The Democrats! The Republicans!

Instead, it's just Trump being Trump.

Former RNC chair Michael Steele isn't buying Attorney General William Barr's criticism of Donald Trump poking his nose into Justice Department affairs. He doth think there be method to yon president's madness.

Independent:

Citing the White House’s unusually pragmatic reaction to Mr Barr’s remarks, Mr Steele tweeted: “Slow your roll if you think Barr is breaking from Trump.

“This was a carefully staged message to cool down pissed off DOJ attys whom Barr undercut & to avoid any further internal strife.

“This message does not get sideways with Trump because he’s already done what Trump wanted.”

Ah, the old sleight of hand, switcheroo, distraction play. We know it well. Barr pretends to criticize Trump, while giving him a wink and a nudge that he really didn't mean it. Or perhaps, Barr and Trump cooked up this little Kabuki dance together and are laughing over a single-malt Scotch in the White House at the hysterical reaction of the press.

Or maybe Barr refuses to look like a presidential toady. Which do you think is most probable?

CNN agrees with Steele and has a few other theories as well.

Perhaps Barr was acting to protect his own reputation, amid furious criticism of his conduct as the President's shield. Or was he trying to head off a mutiny in his department? CNN reported on Wednesday that more prosecutors were considering walking out on the Justice Department amid fears for its independence after four lawyers had already quit the Stone case.

In the days ahead it may emerge that Barr gave the White House a heads-up about his move. A coordinated damage-control mission would not be impossible, since more than anyone in the administration, Barr may have leeway to buy some political capital, after basking in Trump's praise for a string of decisions that appeared to protect the President.

"In the days ahead it may emerge" that CNN reporters are from another planet, which explains their odd, hysterical reporting on Trump. Just about anything "may emerge" in the next few days as liars at DoJ and the White House look to curry favor with the press by passing on outrageous rumors. It's an old game in Washington. And the more anti-Trump the rumors, the more likely they will get air time.

If Trump does fire Barr, maybe it's because Barr wanted to go. Maybe Barr criticized Trump because he was tired of working for the government (and Trump) and wanted to go out in a blaze of glory. Maybe he just wants to take a long vacation on St. Croix.

Or maybe, an apple is really just an apple.

WTH?… US Attorney Jessie Liu Recommended Criminal Charges Against McCabe in September – Liu Resigns and DOJ Drops Charges Against McCabe

Then-US Attorney Jessie Liu in September formally recommended pursuing criminal charges against former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

The charges against McCabe were related to his false statements to feds in the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton.

McCabe was criminally referred to the US Attorneys office for prosecution in the Spring of 2018 after the DOJ Inspector General found McCabe lied to federal investigators.

McCabe’s staunch supporters were convinced his arrest was imminent given the DOJ rejected McCabe’s last minute appeal.

Fox News previously reported:

U.S. Attorney Jessie Liu has recommended moving forward with charges against Andrew McCabe, Fox News has learned, as the Justice Department rejects a last-ditch appeal from the former top FBI official.

McCabe — the former deputy and acting director of the FBI — appealed the decision of the U.S. attorney for Washington all the way up to Jeffrey Rosen, the deputy attorney general, but he rejected that request, according to a person familiar with the situation.

A source close to McCabe’s legal team said they received an email from the Department of Justice which said, “The Department rejected your appeal of the United States Attorney’s Office’s decision in this matter. Any further inquiries should be directed to the United States Attorney’s Office.”

So what happened at the DOJ between September and today that caused a huge reversal on McCabe’s imminent indictment?

Jessie Liu, who recommended criminal charges against McCabe, resigned this week after Trump withdrew her nomination for a job at the Treasury Department.

Liu was involved in several of Mueller’s cases including the prosecution of General Flynn and Roger Stone.

Just two days after Jessie Liu resigned, the Department of Justice announced it dropped its criminal investigation into Andrew McCabe.

His lawyers made the announcement on Friday morning.

McCabe’s attorneys also said the case was closed.

McCabe’s attorneys told reporters this morning, “We are pleased that Andrew McCabe and his family can go on with their lives without this cloud hanging over them.”

Meanwhile, the same Justice Department recommended an outrageous and abusive sentencing for Roger Stone.

Americans are fed up with the two-tiered justice system!

Massive Blaze in Haiti Orphanage Kills 15 Children

Fifteen children have died in a massive fire that broke out at the Orphanage of the Church of Bible Understanding in the town of Fermate near Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince, media reported on Friday, citing local authorities.

According to the Haiti Libre news portal, citing Director General of the country's Institute of Social Welfare and Research Arielle Villedroin, the blaze broke out on Thursday evening and could have been an accident.

The orphanage was banned from operating back in 2012 as inspectors established that children were living in filthy and overcrowded conditions and the institute had lack of trained staff.

Pentagon Moves To Finally Cut Off Sales Of American Chips To Huawei

The Pentagon has followed through with threats to drop its opposition to tighter sales restrictions involving American-made components, the WSJ reports, signaling that the Trump Administration is adopting a policy of no mercy as Germany's legislature prepares to make an important decision that will govern Huawei's access to the German market.

Here's a brief summary in case you haven't been following the simmering beef between Washington and Huawei, which has played out over the past 18 months in a bevy of attacks on the US side.

In December 2018, Canadian police arrested Huawei's CFO Meng Wanzhou, who is also the daughter of the company's widely-beloved father. Since then, the Commerce Department has added Huawei to its 'entities list' - essentially a 'black list' that requires companies to get special permission from the Department if it wants to sell American made goods to Huawei (it applies to products with even a relatively modest percentage of American-made components).

Though the signing of the 'Phase 1' trade deal temporarily eased tensions (Washington quietly exempted Huawei from the strictures of the blacklist), now that the trade deal has essentially collapsed thanks to China's economic woes, and now that Boris Johnson has defied Washington and allowed Huawei to work on ''con-core" components of Britain's 5G network, Washington is realizing that maybe it shouldn't have been so gentle. Now, the Pentagon is sending a clear message: 'We're done playing games.'

Earlier in the week, Pentagon officials issued a trial balloon: A leaked report in the WSJ claiming they had discussed reinstating Commerce Department restrictions that would essentially ban Huawei from buying American-made products. It's unclear whether that had any impact on German legislators' thinking, or Johnson's. And as part of the continuing effort to hamstring Huawei, the DoJ added a "Racketeering" charge in its case against the company, which is playing out between prosecutors in at least two federal districts.

One of the reasons Washington initially hesitated to move ahead with a complete ban was the American semi-conductor industry, which would have been badly hurt by the measure (Huawei being a major customer of American chips).
