Woman blames NYC sanctuary policy for her grandmother's death

A woman whose 92-year-old grandmother was slain in a sanctuary city-related killing blamed New York City Friday for her death, and praised President Trump for fighting the city to end the policy.

Speaking at the White House next to President Trump, Daria Ortiz said her grandmother, Maria Fuertes, was a legal immigrant from the Dominican Republic who was a “shining example” of coming to the U.S. the right way.

Authorities say Fuertes was raped and killed by Reeaz Khan, 21.

ICE had tried to take custody of Khan after an arrest late last year but New York authorities ignored a detainer request, which ICE said allowed him to be out on the streets.

“The tragedy in all of this is that this could have been avoided had there been no sanctuary law,” Ms. Ortiz said. “The system not only failed our family but it failed our city.”

Mr. Trump and New York have been engaged in a fierce feud over sanctuary policies. The president met with Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday to try to work out a compromise on the state’s new sanctuary law banning Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from access to state driver’s records.

Sanctuary jurisdictions say immigrants won’t report crimes if they believe their police share information with federal immigration authorities.

Make California Red Again

Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez responds to Californians hurt by AB 5

Since the start of 2020, KUSI has received messages from dozens of people who have been negatively affected by Assembly Bill 5. Their occupations vary, as we heard from truckers, translators, photojournalists, cartoonists, musicians and more.

This bill’s author, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez-Fletcher has said the bill’s goal was to protect workers who are being misclassified as independent contractors rather than employees, specifically those who work for Uber and Lyft.

She told us that there is no indication that thousands of freelancers have been laid off.

However, many of the independent contractors we have heard from have said they don’t want to be employees, and Gonzalez’s bill is producing the complete opposite result.

Lorena Gonzalez joined us in studio to respond to the Californians who claim they have been negatively affected by her sweeping bill that aims to reclassify independent contractors as employees.

Delta unveils 10-year plan to become world's 1st carbon-neutral airline

Feb. 14 (UPI) – Delta Air Lines, the world's second-largest carrier, announced plans Friday to mount an ambitious 10-year strategy during which it will spend at least $1 billion and become the world's first carbon-neutral airline.

The Atlanta-based carrier said it will launch the effort next month, which will include investments in green air travel technologies, methods to reduce carbon emissions and waste and development of projects to mitigate emissions it does produce.

"There is no substitute for the power that travel has to connect people, which our world needs today more than ever before," Delta CEO Ed Bastian said in a statement. "It is our responsibility to deliver on our promise to bring people together and ensure the utmost care for our environment.

"The time is now to accelerate our investments and establish an ambitious commitment that the entire Delta team will deliver."

Delta said its plans also include cutting its use of jet fuel, investing in forestry, restoring wetlands, recapturing soil, building green coalitions with employees and suppliers.

Delta is the world's largest carrier by revenue and the second-largest by passenger traffic, behind only American Airlines.

Delta is the latest major company to mount an ambitious environmental strategy. Teenage climate change activist Greta Thurnberg gained widespread fame last year when she refused to fly to the United States for a climate change summit – not wanting to contribute to the industry's carbon output – and sailed instead.

JetBlue Airways announced last month it will offset emissions from all domestic flights and British carrier EasyJet said last fall it also will become carbon neutral.
