Susan Brophy

For more than 10 years at The Glover Park Group, Susan Brophy has used her expertise in trade, energy and environment, telecom and intellectual property to represent clients in Congress and with the Administration.

 

Before joining GPG, Susan was a Senior Vice President at the Time Warner Global Public Policy Office in Washington, D.C. She was responsible for issues related to the protection of intellectual property, telecommunications and trade for Time Warner’s seven business units. She also advised Chairman and CEO Dick Parsons on politics and policy.

 

In 1998, Susan moved to Lisbon, Portugal with her husband, Gerald McGowan, the U.S. Ambassador to Portugal. While there, Susan taught courses on American Government at Universidade Catolica. During this period, she also served as a board member of the Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations.

 

Previously, Susan served at the White House as Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs, where she developed, implemented and directed legislative strategy with the White House, Administration and Congress in support of President Clinton’s policy priorities.

 

Susan served as Chief of Staff to Senator Timothy Wirth (D-CO) and Congressman (later Senator) Byron Dorgan (D-ND).

 

Susan received a BA from the University of New Hampshire and a Master’s of Public Administration from Harvard University. She currently serves on the board of the ISCTE Business School of Portugal. Susan lives with her husband in Arlington, VA.

John P. Driscoll

Chairman

John Driscoll, CEO of CareCentrix, brings more than 25 years of health care experience to the company. Prior to CareCentrix, John served as President at Castlight Health, a health-care technology company. Previously, John served as Group President for new markets at Medco and led product development for Medco’s employer and health plan clients. At Medco, he was responsible for corporate development and the company’s entry into Medicare, international markets and pharmaceutical services.

 

John founded and chaired the Surescripts ePrescribing Network, and served as an advisor to Oak Investment Partners, holding a number of senior operating positions at Oxford Health Plans, including corporate vice president for government programs.

 

John has a BA and MBA from Harvard University as well as an M.Phil from Cambridge University in England. He is the chairman of the Truman National Security Project and is an advisory board member of Bread for the World.

Sherri Goodman

Sherri Goodman is an experienced leader and senior executive, lawyer and director in the fields of national security, energy, science, oceans and environment. She is a Senior Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center and CNA, and the Senior Strategist at the Center for Climate and Security. Previously, she served as the President and CEO of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership.

 

Goodman served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of CNA (Center for Naval Analyses) where she was also the founder and Executive Director of the CNA Military Advisory Board, whose landmark reports include National Security and the Threat of Climate Change (2007), and National Security and the Accelerating Risks of Climate Change (2014), Advanced Energy and US National Security (2017), and The Role of Water Stress in Instability and Conflict (2017) among others. The film The Age of Consequences in which Goodman is featured, is based on the work of the CNA Military Advisory Board.

 

Goodman served as the first Deputy Undersecretary of Defense (Environmental Security) from 1993-2001. As the chief environmental, safety, and occupational health officer for the Department of Defense (DoD), she oversaw an annual budget of over $5 billion. She established the first environmental, safety and health performance metrics for the Department and, as the nation’s largest energy user, led its energy, environmental and natural resource conservation programs. Overseeing the President’s plan for revitalizing base closure communities, she ensured that 80% of base closure property became available for transfer and reuse. Ms. Goodman has twice received the DoD medal for Distinguished Public Service, the Gold Medal from the National Defense Industrial Association, and the EPA’s Climate Change Award.

 

Goodman has served on the staff of the Senate Armed Services Committee for Committee Chairman Senator Sam Nunn. She has practiced law at Goodwin Procter, as both a litigator and environmental attorney, and has worked at RAND and SAIC.

 

Goodman serves on the boards of the Atlantic Council and its Resilience Center, the Council on Strategic Risk, the Joint Ocean Commission Leadership Council, the Marshall Legacy Institute, Marstel-Day LLC, the National Executive Committee of the US Water Partnership, the Advisory Committee of the US Global Change Research Program and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). She is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, served on its Arctic Task Force in 2016 and on the Board of its Center for Preventive Action.

 

Previously, she served on the Boards of Blue Star Families, the Committee on Conscience of the U.S. Holocaust Museum, the National Academy of Sciences’ Boards on Energy and Environmental Systems (BEES) and Environmental Systems and Toxicology (BEST), and the Secretary of State’s International Security Advisory Board.

 

She has also served on the Responsibility to Protect Working Group co-chaired by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. In 2010, Goodman served on the Quadrennial Defense Review Independent Panel co-chaired by former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley and former Secretary of Defense Bill Perry.

 

Goodman has testified before numerous committees of the U.S. Congress, and conducted interviews with print, television, radio and online media. She has published widely in various print and on line media and in legal and scholarly journals. She has been an Adjunct Lecturer in International Affairs and Security at the Kennedy School of Government and an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Kennedy School’s Center for Science and International Affairs.

 

The daughter of Holocaust refugees who arrived in New York in the late 1930s, she was born in Queens.

 

A summa cum laude graduate of Amherst College, she earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and a masters in public policy degree from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She received an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Amherst College in 2018.

Craig Hanson

Craig has extensive experience in venture capital and company management working to grow the next generation of leadership companies and develop new markets globally. As General Partner and Co-Founder of Next World Capital, Craig works closely with management teams on strategy and growth in the U.S. and Europe, resulting in accelerated growth, international expansion, job creation and technology innovation. He has been an investor or senior executive in more than 20 venture-backed companies.

 

Prior to co-founding NWC, Craig was a Vice President with FTV Capital, an expansion-stage venture capital firm with $1 billion under management investing in enterprise software companies worldwide. He was also a Principal at Vista Ventures, a technology venture capital firm, and a Vice President at Berenson Minella & Company, where he worked on large growth capital and buyout investments, as well as completed several acquisitions and financings, through the firm’s private equity and investment banking operations. He has also been the CFO of a venture-backed technology company, and began his career as an investment banker with Credit Suisse First Boston.

Lionel C. Johnson

Lionel C. Johnson became president of the Pacific Pension & Investment Institute in July 2014. His career spans more than three decades during which he has been a leader in international business, public policy, and economic development. He has served as senior vice president of the Initiative for Global Development, as vice president of Turkey, Middle East, and North Africa Affairs at the Chamber of Commerce of the United States, and as senior vice president of Public Affairs at Fleishman-Hillard.

 

Previously, Johnson was vice president and director of International Government Affairs at Citigroup and deputy assistant secretary of the Treasury for International Development, Debt and Environment Policy in the Clinton Administration. He was also a senior advisor for Resources, Plans, and Policy to Secretary of State Warren Christopher, and a member of the Department of State Policy Planning Staff. He served as deputy director of the Clinton/Gore transition team at the Department of State.

 

As a member of the U.S. Foreign Service, Johnson held assignments in the U.S. Embassies in Haiti, the Philippines and Kenya. He also served as special assistant to Secretaries of State George P. Shultz and James A. Baker III. Johnson was a senior program officer at the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. He was a graduate instructor of U.S. foreign policy and American politics at the City University of Manila, Philippines, and received his B.A. in political science from Rutgers University in 1982.

 

Johnson is a visiting scholar of the Program on International Relations of New York University. He is a member of the board of trustees of the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, California. Johnson also serves on the board of directors of Foreign Policy for America, the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation, and the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition. He has two children, Alicia and Christopher.

Frank Kendall

Frank Kendall is an independent consultant to defense industry firms and non-profit research organizations. He is an Executive in Residence at Renaissance Strategic Advisors in Rosslyn, VA, a member of the board of directors of Leidos Corporation, a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. From 2012 to 2017, Mr. Kendall served as the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics (AT&L). Mr. Kendall has more than 45 years of experience in engineering, management, defense acquisition, and national security affairs in private industry, government, and the military. Earlier in his career Mr. Kendall was the Vice President of Engineering for Raytheon Company, and the Deputy Director of Defense Research and Engineering for Tactical Warfare Programs. In addition, Mr. Kendall is an attorney and has been active in the field of human rights, working primarily on a pro bono basis. In 2016, Mr. Kendall was named "Aviation Week and Space Technology" Person of the Year (together with Secretary ash Carter and Deputy Secretary Robert Work). He is the author of "Getting Defense Acquisition Right" (Defense Acquisition University Press 2017). Mr. Kendall holds degrees from West Point, the California Institute of Technology, the C W Post Center of Long Island University, and Georgetown University Law Center. He is an avid sailor and ocean racer and resides in Falls Church, VA, with his wife Beth and youngest son, James.

Mark Lindsay

Mark Lindsay served on President Obama’s Transition Team and in President Clinton’s White House as Assistant to the President for the Office of Management and Administration. His areas of responsibility included the White House Military Office, which managed Air Force One, The White House Communications Agency, the Medical Unit and Camp David; running the White House Operations; and the Executive Office of the President’s Office of Administration, which was responsible for finance, information systems, human resources, legal/appropriations and security. Mr. Lindsay’s office was responsible for the logistics of all domestic and international Presidential travel and special air missions. President Clinton selected Mr. Lindsay to be the operational lead for the White House’s 2001 transition preparation and execution.

 

Prior to his appointment to the White House, Mr. Lindsay served as senior legislative aid and counsel to Congressman Louis Stokes (D-OH). He worked closely with Democrats and the Congressional Black Caucus on a number of business and economic issues.

 

Mr. Lindsay was a member of Senator Hillary Clinton’s Minnesota Finance Committee for her 2008 Presidential campaign.

 

Before joining The Livingston Group, Mr. Lindsay was with UnitedHealth Group, one of the world’s largest healthcare companies, where he held a number of senior positions including President of the AARP Pharmacy Services Division and Vice President of Public Communications and Strategy.

Alvin Loshak is a Director at Bank of American Merrill Lynch and Global Head of USD Exotic Derivatives.

 

Prior to joining Bank of America Merrill Lynch in 2012, Mr. Loshak was Managing Principal of Beresin Loshak Asset Management and spent 11 years at Credit Suisse focusing on derivatives and structured products.

 

Mr. Loshak has served on the Board of Trustees of Bard College at Simon's Rock and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Internationals Network for Public Schools, a non-profit organization focused on educating recent immigrants as well as policy and advocacy surrounding immigration and education.

Sally Painter

Sally A. Painter is Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer at Blue Star Strategies, LLC. Ms. Painter’s work experience includes time spent at both the highest level of government and at major corporations in the private sector. Given this diverse background, she provides corporate, institutional and public sector clients with results-oriented external affairs, foreign/security policy and business development strategies. Ms. Painter has an extensive track record working with Central Europe on security and policy issues, including successfully representing many of these countries on their NATO and EU bids, as well as an historic Visa Equity Coalition of seven countries where legislation was passed in the U.S. Congress which allows their citizens to enter the US visa-free.

 

Ms. Painter has managed many large-scale public-private projects, including as a senior advisor on the global NATO Summits including: Washington, DC–1999, Prague – 2002, Istanbul – 2004 and Riga – 2006. In this capacity, she worked directly with the leadership of the host country, CEOs of global corporations, the U.S. Congress, NATO Headquarters and the Bush and Clinton White Houses to promote and educate transatlantic leaders on the importance of the NATO Alliance. Ms. Painter is also a member of the Board of the US Committee on NATO. As such, she played a significant role in supporting NATO expansion. Instrumental in this successful process was a thorough understanding and ability to work with the foreign policy decision-makers within the transatlantic community.

 

For the last 15 years, Ms. Painter has also worked with opposition leaders to promote democracy and transparency in countries in transition, including: Albania, Argentina, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kazakhstan, Romania, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Venezuela.

 

Throughout 2000 she served as Executive Director of the Business Coalition for U.S.-China Trade, a business group of 100 major corporate leaders that secured passage of Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China – the largest trade legislation ever concluded.

 

For three and a half years, Ms. Painter served as the Director of International at Tenneco Inc, a Fortune 500 company with manufacturing facilities in 42 countries. In this capacity, she advanced the corporation's business interests, negotiating new ventures with host governments in more than 20 countries. While at Tenneco, she was instrumental in the creation and early management of the Transatlantic Business Dialogue (TABD) and the French American Business Council, two public-private organizations designed to engage business leaders and government officials to resolve trade disputes.

 

Prior to joining Tenneco, Ms. Painter was a senior advisor in the Clinton Administration. As such, she helped manage the outreach and advocacy program for the late Secretary of Commerce, Ronald H. Brown, by providing strategic advice and advocacy to U.S companies bidding and winning overseas contracts.

 

Ms. Painter is on the Board of Directors of The Truman National Security Project, the Global Fairness Initiative, Partners for Democratic Change, and 4D PAC, a progressive national security political action committee. She is also a member of the Atlantic Council. She writes frequently on European issues and has been published in the Washington Post, Politico, WE-NATO, The Hill, and the Progressive Policy Institute’s Progressive Fix, among others.

 

Ms. Painter’s accomplishments have been featured in The Wall Street Journal and she has been a guest speaker on Fox News Live and Al Jazeera. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the Golden Laurel Branch Award (the highest honor of the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Bulgaria), the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit from the Republic of Hungary, and The Minister of Defense’s Award for Distinction from the Republic of Latvia. In addition, she is a producer for the Broadway production Ann, a critically acclaimed dramatization of the life of former Texas Governor Ann Richards. She is a certified downhill ski instructor and is married with one son, George, a design stylist.

Julissa Reynoso

Julissa Reynoso is a partner at the law firm of Winston and Strawn. Julissa's extensive experience includes analyzing and advising on complex cross-border litigations, investigations and disputes before U.S. Courts and Agencies. Julissa has conducted arbitrations under the major international rules, including ICC and UNCITRAL, and managed bilateral investment treaty disputes under the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Julissa is the former United States Ambassador to Uruguay. She also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Central American, Caribbean and Cuban Affairs in the US Department of State. While in this role, Julissa was charged with developing comprehensive security and rule of law strategies for Central America and the Caribbean. Julissa is the recipient of the highest diplomatic honors bestowed by several Latin American governments. Julissa serves on the boards of several nonprofit and advocacy organizations, and was on the faculty of Columbia Law School and Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs. Julissa serves as trustee for New York-Presbyterian Hospital and for Columbia University. Julissa was appointed to co-chair New York Attorney General Letitia James' transition committee. She speaks Spanish and Portuguese. Julissa holds degrees from Harvard University, the University of Cambridge and Columbia Law School.

Matthew Spence

Dr. Matthew Spence is a Senior Fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for International Affairs. From 2012 to 2015, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East Policy, where he was the principal advisor to three Secretaries of Defense for U.S. policy towards the Middle East. He was responsible for fourteen countries, including Iraq, Syria, Iran, Israel, Egypt, and the Gulf states. During his time at the Pentagon, Dr. Spence traveled to Israel over 30 times, and played a central role in U.S.-Israel military planning, the Iron Dome program, arms sales, and policy dialogues about Iran, Syria, Egypt, and the Middle East Peace Process.

 

Dr. Spence also served in a senior role on Secretary of Defense Ash Carter’s confirmation and transition team. He received the Secretary of Defense Award for Outstanding Public Service.

 

From 2009 to 20012, Dr. Spence worked at the White House on the National Security Council as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for International Economic Affairs and as Senior Advisor to two National Security Advisors. He also served on the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition Team.

 

Dr. Spence is the co-founder of the Truman National Security Project, and started the Truman Project chapters in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New Haven. He was a Lecturer in International Relations at Oxford University, and has been widely published in national security and foreign policy. Trained as a lawyer, Dr. Spence also practiced criminal and international law in California, and served as a law clerk for Judge Richard Posner of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. A Marshall Scholar and Truman Scholar, Dr. Spence received his doctorate in International Relations from Oxford University; J.D. from Yale Law School; and B.A. and M.A. in International Policy Studies from Stanford University. He was born and raised in southern California.

Jake Sullivan

Jake Sullivan is the Martin R. Flug Visiting Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School and a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He served in the Obama administration as national security adviser to Vice President Joe Biden and Director of Policy Planning at the U.S. Department of State, as well as deputy chief of staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He was the Senior Policy Adviser on Secretary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. Previously, he served as deputy policy director on Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential primary campaign, and a member of the debate preparation team for Barack Obama's general election campaign. Sullivan also previously served as a senior policy adviser and chief counsel to Senator Amy Klobuchar from his home state of Minnesota, worked as an associate for Faegre & Benson LLP, and taught at the University of St. Thomas Law School. He clerked for Judge Stephen Breyer of the Supreme Court of the United States and Judge Guido Calabresi of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Sullivan holds undergraduate and law degrees from Yale and a master's degree from Oxford.
