Trump plans to take 'The Beast' for a lap at Daytona 500

President Trump is planning on taking the presidential limo, known as "The Beast," for a ride at the Daytona 500. The White House is working with NASCAR officials for Trump to do a lap on the Daytona track in Florida to start off the racing season on Sunday, sources told Fox News White House correspondent John Roberts, who said the plan is "not 100%" as the logistics are still being worked out.

Trump plans to attend the Daytona 500, which marks the start to NASCAR’s 2020 season, on his way back to Washington, D.C., after a weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. A Trump campaign adviser leaked plans for the stop earlier in the week. "It’s the base," a Trump campaign adviser said. "God-fearing, country-loving Americans."

NASCAR welcomed the president’s visit and named him the grand marshal of Sunday’s race, making Trump the first sitting president to hold the honor. "Daytona International Speedway has been privileged to have hosted several sitting Presidents of the United States over our history," Daytona International Speedway President Chip Wile said in a statement. "We’re honored that the President of the United States has chosen to experience the pageantry and excitement of ‘The Great American Race’ by attending Sunday’s 62nd annual Daytona 500."

"The Beast," which looks like a Cadillac XT6 sedan, is the president’s armored car. It weighs close to 10 tons and costs roughly $1.5 million. It comes with safety features to protect the president from a wide range of threats, including terrorism or an assassination attempt. The car carries a variety of medical supplies, including a fridge stocked with Trump’s blood type.

GOP governor endorses Bill Weld over Trump

The Republican governor of Vermont, Phil Scott, endorsed GOP presidential candidate Bill Weld in a show of defiance against President Trump. Scott, 61, backed the former governor of Massachusetts at a press conference on Saturday, saying, “I’ve met with him before, I think a lot of him and his platform, so I would be supporting him," according to the Hill.

The endorsement comes less than three weeks before Vermont’s March 3 primary. Trump has so far dominated the Republican nomination fight in the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. “I’m a great admirer of @GovPhilScott of Vermont, and am delighted to have his endorsement in the Republican presidential primary on Super Tuesday. VT has been well served in the past by Republican governors, and Gov. Scott admirably extends that tradition,” Weld tweeted after Scott’s endorsement.

The endorsement came as no surprise as Scott is no fan of Trump. In September, the Vermont governor backed the impeachment investigation into Trump's decision-making in holding up aid to Ukraine while seeking investigations into his political rivals. Trump was acquitted on two charges by the Senate earlier this month. ”I support getting the facts in that inquiry that’s happening today. So, I think these are serious allegations, and we need to make sure that we do the fact-finding and figure out what exactly did happen," Scott said in the fall.

US attorney caved to 'ultimatum' by Mueller prosecutors in Roger Stone case

Attorney General William Barr's handpicked top prosecutor presiding over the Roger Stone case reportedly caved to prosecutors seeking a steep prison sentence for the longtime friend of President Trump. Timothy Shea, the recently installed interim U.S. attorney in D.C., informed Justice Department leadership that 'he believed the initial seven-to-nine-year sentencing recommendation for Stone was too excessive', DOJ sources told the Wall Street Journal's Kimberley Strassel.

But the four line prosecutors, including three who served on special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, threatened to withdraw from the case if their penalty request was diminished, and with Monday's court deadline approaching, Shea relented. "Mr. Shea — new to the job — suffered a moment of cowardice and submitted to this ultimatum," Strassel wrote. Once DOJ leadership learned of the tall sentencing recommendation for Stone, who was convicted of witness tampering and lying to Congress, they moved to overrule the prosecutors, suggesting instead up to four years of prison time. In short order, the four federal prosecutors withdrew from the case, and one quit his job entirely. A Justice Department representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this report.

As Trump tweeted about the original guidance early Tuesday, calling it a “miscarriage of justice” before the reversal, Democrats have accused him and Attorney General William Barr of interfering in the case, demanding investigations. Prosecutors from around the country told the media that the Stone situation has increased their anxiety about working on any cases that might attract interest from Trump for fear that Barr would not back them up. Barr said he was "very surprised" by the tougher suggested penalty but claimed the decision to scale it back was made before Trump slammed the guidance. He also told ABC News on Thursday that Trump’s constant public commentary on the Justice Department makes “it impossible for me to do my job” and claimed that his work would remain independent from the president’s political desires. The White House said Trump "wasn't bothered" by Barr condemning his tweets, but the president tweeted about Barr the very next day. "'The President has never asked me to do anything in a criminal case,'" Trump said Friday on Twitter, quoting Barr. "This doesn’t mean that I do not have, as President, the legal right to do so, I do, but I have so far chosen not to!"
