Biden: 3 million deportations under Obama were 'a mistake'

2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden conceded it was a "mistake" that millions of people were deported from the United States under the Obama administration. Biden, 77, addressed the frequently used criticism of his time as vice president during an interview with Univision anchor Jorge Ramos on Friday.

He called the 3 million deportations that took place under the previous administration “a big mistake" and added that "we took too long to get it right.” “The point is there was too many,” he said. “I saw the pain in the eyes of so many people who saw their families being deported. I know what it’s like to lose family members. It was painful … It wasn’t until 2012 that we began to get it right with the DACA program and trying very much in 2014 to expand that and moving in the right direction."

The topic of Obama-era deportations has been a question Biden has been forced to answer for at times during the campaign. At September's Democratic primary debate, Biden was addressing the crowd when protesters interrupted him by screaming "3 million deportations!" At another point in the interview, Ramos confronted Biden about how children caught crossing the southern border illegally were put in cages, albeit at a lower frequency than that of the current administration.

'You actually did': Journalist confronts Biden about locking immigrant children in cages

Former Vice President Joe Biden argued the Obama administration’s containment of unaccompanied minors at detention centers along the southern border cannot be compared to the current administration’s hard-line immigration policies. The discussion about immigration took place Friday when Univision anchor Jorge Ramos interviewed the 2020 Democratic presidential candidate.

"At the debate in Houston, you said that during the Obama administration and I quote, ‘We didn't lock people in cages,' but you actually did — not in the same numbers as the Trump administration, but you did,” Ramos told Biden on his Real America show. “We found a picture of an 8-year-old boy from Honduras. … I spoke with the photographer,” Ramos added, noting the photo was from a detention center in McAllen, Texas, in 2014. “Yes. And what happened was, all the unaccompanied children coming across the border, we tried to get them out. We kept them safe and get them out of the detention centers,” Biden replied. “Essentially that center, that were run by Homeland Security and get them into communities as quickly as we can.” Ramos pressed further, telling the former vice president, “Many people would say there were cages.” “Well, look, you know, you're not telling the truth here about the comparison of the two things,” Biden pushed back. “I'm saying that the numbers in your administration were not the same as the ones we're seeing right now with the Trump administration,” Ramos responded. “Well, beyond that, but look how quickly we got them out and got them back to families. Look how we didn't engage and we sought the relatives here," Biden said, adding: “We sought to get them into safe communities. We sought to get them out of the control of Homeland Security to get them safe. But they came unaccompanied, unaccompanied.”

The Obama administration released unaccompanied minors who came through border detention centers to guardians inside the United States. By late 2015, a Homeland Security Department whistleblower contacted Congress over the program and alleged thousands of children were placed in homes with guardians with criminal histories. The whistleblower, former Immigration and Customs Enforcement supervisor Jason Piccolo, wrote in the Washington Examiner: “There were 29,000 sponsors on the massive spreadsheet; 3,669 of the sponsors were convicted of crimes. The crimes ranged, among other things; from re-entry after deportation (a felony offense) to assault to actual sex crimes.”

'Fascist!': Michael Bloomberg heckled by gun rights activists in Virginia

RICHMOND, Virginia — A group of pro-Second Amendment activists heckled former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg at a campaign event early Saturday night. Midway into Bloomberg’s remarks one protester yelled, “You’re f—ing fascist! … you’re a racist!” The crowd began to boo the heckler and chant, “We like Mike.” The group of protesters, some of whom were wearing “guns save lives” stickers, began chanting “guns save lives” as security pushed them out of the premise. Bloomberg, who helped spearhead support for Virginia Democrats who promised to pass gun control legislation in the Commonwealth this year, boasted about helping the state legislature turn blue.

"I've been to Virginia more than anywhere else … I have been involved in Virginia politics since long before I became a presidential candidate. In 2013 I was a big supporter of Terry McAuliffe," Bloomberg said. He also referenced the violent 2017 Charlottesville protests, saying, "Of course Virginia had to grapple with its past while Terry was in office." "In 2017, 2018, and 2019 we were fighting against the hate displayed in Charlottesville," he said. "Last year in more than 25 years all that work paid off and Democrats took control of both chambers [of the Virginia state house]."

Bloomberg, a late entry to the Democratic race, has seen surging poll numbers despite not being on the ballot for the Iowa caucuses or the New Hampshire primary, the nation’s first litmus tests for those vying for the Democratic presidential nomination. A RealClearPolitics national average of polls has Bloomberg in third place at 14.2% behind former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

'More guidance and regulation': Zuckerberg requests government rules on 'what discourse should be allowed'

MUNICH — Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg called on Western governments to provide regulatory guidance for how social media companies can identify the boundaries of “what discourse should be allowed” on their platforms. “There should be more guidance and regulation from the states on basically — take political advertising as an example — what discourse should be allowed?” Zuckerberg told an assembly of Western leaders Saturday at the Munich Security Conference. “Or, on the balance of free expression and some things that people call harmful expression, where do you draw the line?”

Facebook has faced accusations of mismanagement since Russia launched a series of high-profile election interference operations against Western countries, most notably the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. Sen. Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, said federal legislation is necessary to counteract anti-conservative “political censorship,” while European Union officials are mulling antitrust proposals targeting Facebook. “There are a lot of decisions in these areas that are really just balances between different social values,” Zuckerberg said. “It's about coming up with an answer that society feels is legitimate and that they can get behind and understand that you drew the line here on the balance of free expression and safety. It's not just that there's one right answer. People need to feel like, ‘OK, enough people weighed in, and that’s why the answer should be this, and we can get behind that.’”

That argument gives a preview of the charm offensive that Zuckerberg will attempt during his meetings next week with European Union officials. His meeting in 2018 with members of the European Parliament backfired, as Zuckerberg’s performance left European Union leaders stewing that he had avoided giving specific answers to their most pressing questions. This time, he is prepared to argue that regulations are necessary to preserve free speech and privacy rights from authoritarian rule-makers. “We need to make sure that the internet can continue to be a place where everyone can share their views openly and where the legal framework around this is one that encodes democratic values,” he said. “I do think that as part of that, we've got to move forward on regulation. Hopefully, we move forward quickly before a more authoritarian model gets adopted in a lot of places first.”

Rigging mechanisms are now on display.. not going to be as easy as it was, these state primaries/caucuses don't take place all in one day, with that they are easier to track..Bernies team will not let it happen this time they have worked too hard to get back where they were.
