Heathrow Airport apologizes for IT failure disruption
Heathrow Airport has apologised for disruption after the west London hub was hit by "technical issues".
One passenger said the situation was "utter chaos" after a problem with the airport's IT system saw staff called in to help passengers get to gates on the second day of the half-term weekend.
At about 22:25 GMT on Sunday, Heathrow said the issues had been resolved and "systems are returning to normal".
British Airways, the biggest airline at Heathrow, has cancelled 20 flights.
In a tweet, Heathrow Airport said: "Today's technical issue has now been resolved and Heathrow's systems are returning to normal.
"We apologise for the inconvenience caused.
"Our teams will continue to monitor our systems and be on hand to provide assistance to passengers as we work to resume our regular operations."
Air traffic control was not affected by the technical failures, but the IT issues, which came on a busy day for family travel, have further compounded delays triggered by bad weather across the weekend. Sam Mills, who was travelling from London to Pittsburgh with British Airways, explained how when he arrived at the airport shortly after lunchtime on Sunday the flight boards were not updating.
British Airways said the cancellations were the result of Heathrow's IT issues combined with the existing disruption caused by Storm Dennis.
It added that anyone on a cancelled flight would be entitled to a refund or could be re-booked. Overnight accommodation would be provided if necessary.
In response to a customer on Twitter, the airline wrote: "We're aware Heathrow Airport is currently experiencing a technical issue that is impacting some of their IT systems across the airport, affecting a number of airlines.
"We are working with them to resolve the issue as a priority and apologise for the delay to our customers." BA has experienced two high-profile IT failures in recent years.
In August last year, more than 100 flights had to be cancelled and a further 200 were delayed after an IT glitch involving two separate systems, one dealing with online check-in and the other with flight departures.
The airline also suffered a major computer failure over the spring bank holiday weekend in May 2017, which saw 726 flights cancelled and tens of thousands of passengers left stranded.

Harley J. Earl Trophy
The Harley J. Earl Trophy is named after General Motors car designer Harley Earl. Earl, the second commissioner of NASCAR, was the designer of the Chevrolet Corvette his Firebird I concept car provides the basis of the automobile that sits atop the trophy;the car is often misidentified as Sir Malcolm Campbell's "Blue Bird" land speed record car. Earl was a friend of NASCAR founder Bill France, Sr., who named the trophy after him as a sign of respect.
The trophy is awarded to the winner of the annual Daytona 500, known as "The Great American Race", which acts as the season-opening event for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (formerly known as the Sprint Cup Series, Nextel Cup Series, Winston Cup Series, and Winston Grand National Series), and is also considered the most prestigious and important event on the NASCAR schedule. The trophy is considered to be the most coveted award with which a NASCAR driver can be presented.
The Harley J. Earl Perpetual Trophy, the "official" version of the award, is housed at the Daytona International Speedway. It stands about four feet (1.2 m) tall, five feet (1.5 m) wide and is in the same triangular "tri-oval" shape of Daytona International Speedway. It's removed from its display once a year to appear in victory lane with the winner of the Daytona 500. In 2010, the trophy was removed from the Daytona International Speedway, transported to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and put on display alongside the Borg-Warner Trophy – awarded to the winner of the Indianapolis 500 – in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum during the Indianapolis 500 race week.

Planes carrying American evacuees from virus-hit ship leave Japan
TOKYO (Kyodo) – Two U.S. government-chartered planes carrying hundreds of American citizens evacuated from a coronavirus-hit cruise ship quarantined near Tokyo departed the capital from Haneda airport Monday morning.
The evacuees left Yokohama Port around 1:40 a.m. Monday aboard 10 coaches belonging to Japan's Self-Defense Forces, with drivers in protective suits.
Of some 400 U.S. citizens who were aboard the Diamond Princess docked in Yokohama, 44 tested positive for coronavirus, The Washington Post said, quoting Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Fauci told CBS news that those who tested positive are "going to be in hospitals in Japan." He added "the degree of transmissibility on that cruise ship is essentially akin to being in a hot spot."
The evacuees will be quarantined for 14 days and housed at Travis Air Force Base in California, or Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.
Canada, Hong Kong and Israel have also said they are preparing to send chartered flights to Japan to evacuate their citizens from the vessel, where 355 infections are confirmed. Currently, the ship is holding around 3,000 passengers and crew.
Meanwhile, Japan's fifth chartered flight to evacuate its nationals from the central Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicenter of COVID-19, arrived at Haneda airport Monday morning. On the Boeing 767 were 36 Japanese citizens and 29 family members who are Chinese.
All Japanese citizens and their families of other nationalities in Hubei Province who wish to return to Japan have done so. The Japanese government believes its evacuation operation of citizens by chartered flights is complete, according to the Foreign Ministry.
Of the 65 passengers, 13 were children under 12 and six were aged 60 or above. Twenty-eight of the evacuees were residents of Wuhan, while 37 were from other cities in the province.
The government will continue to provide support to ensure the safety of those who remain in the Chinese province as well as travelers, the ministry said.
A total of 828 people have returned to Japan on the five chartered flights.
